Octuplet mom has 6 other kids!

Fox is running a story about a British woman who got pregnant with octuplets but lost them all around 21 weeks.

This woman was also a single mom. She had polycysitic ovaries so she was prescribed fertility drugs, but then started using them without her doctor's guidance -- resulting in conceiving octuplets before having the opportunity to have some kind of scan to let her know that 8 follicles were "ripe" -- or whatever the term is for what they scan for.

Anyhow -- I'm wondering if these fertility drugs are ever prescribed for anything other than infertility? Perhaps to reduce some symptoms of PCOS?

I can't imagine having so many chldren already and deliberately trying to get pregnant again.

It doesn't say that she is a single mom- just that she lives across the street from her parents (which would certainly be helpful with so many kids.)

Wow, I bet the Duggars are sweating. It took them 20+ years to get their 17, (or however many they have) and this woman gets up to 14 in only 7 years.

I couldn't even imagine having 6, let alone 14....but if she is able to care for all of them and wanted a huge family, then I'm not one to judge her for having so many.

I read about a family who has 19 a few years ago and they seemed like a happy, closely-knit family. They lived like it was 100 years ago way out in the country, but if they are happy like that, then I'm happy for them.

The 11:14 PP pretty much echoed what I was thinking! Is she trying to compete with the Duggars for her own reality show?

Zumbamama, you might be thinking of the Duggars, referenced in the post before yours. They have a reality show. They're extremely religious, dress all the girls in identical prairie dresses, homeschool all the kids, etc.

Though perhaps it's not them... they definitely don't deprive themselves of modern convenience... they live in a giant, brand-new house, have like four washers and four dryers, multiple fridges, etc. And I don't think I've ever seen them keeping their own livestock or growing their own veggies or anything. But then, I've seen 5 minutes of the show on two or three occasions, no more.

I think it's wacky to have more kids than you can afford to house or feed. The Duggars seem to be doing ok (they seem wealthy), but this woman with the 14 kids living with her parents... I think she has to be imbalanced. I had an aunt like that. Dirt poor, and totally compelled to keep having more children. Now her children are repeating the cycle, some of them getting married at 18 just because they're desperate to get away from their mother's nuttiness.

Funny. Hahaha.

No, that loser irresponsible family now has 18 kids as of last summer and counting.

Actually their 18th child was born fairly recently, it made big news. Also, who are you to call them losers? They seem pretty responsible to me, even before having their show, they had made sure to have secure finances and are debt free.

I understand that there are those of you who feel that having more than one or two children is completely irresponsible, but it really isn't your call, no is it.\

As far as the woman with the octuplets goes, I wonder what the whole story is. I think there is something very interesting going on.

I had no idea it was a show...the article I read said all their kids' names began with letter "J." Is that the same one? I hardly watch TV so am out of the loop.

It sounds like she has a serious psychological disorder - she must have lied to her fertility doc about having other kids, and/or gone someplace out of the country where she could find someone willing to put in 8 embryos.

The mother released a statement to the press and she doesn't sound crazy or anything. My surmise, based on no facts what so ever, is that she is a surrogate mother for an infertile couple. She would be a good candidate given her previous track record of having kids. She's young. And with 6 kids of her own, she wouldn't try to fight for custody of the babies after their birth. They probably decided to implant 8 embryos due to the advanced age of the donor eggs, thinking that only one would take. That's just my guess.

Do doctors really do that? When I struggled to conceive baby #2, I was at the crossroads of going the fertility treatment route or adoption. I was hesitant to go the fertility treatment route b/c I didn't want to end up with a litter of babies. My OB (in Montgomery County) told me that responsible docs wouldn't let that happen and that local clinics typically don't have patients carrying more than twins or triplets. I thought that was reassuring.
