I'm married to the 'eye candy' of our elementary school. The shit people say and even worse the shit people tell me they say when I'm not around.

This. I've received the same comment. Luckily I was quick to respond, "of course he is, look at me."

That's just fucking obnoxious and insecure.

Obnoxious yes, but only as the surprised sound when you hear someone talking about your husband. And if she's going to laugh it off as a joke, my response is the same.

No, it's funny!

That's like my husband responding to similar comments with: "She married someone with good taste."

It's always best to laugh it off, that way nothing is awkward.

I am also married to the 'eye candy' of or es like a pp. Women tell me pretty regularly that my husband is handsome. Sometimes I roll my eyes at them, sometimes I say thank you. It really depends on my mood. I never take offense to it. I don't think you have said anything wrong. That said, it becomes inappropriate if you say it again.

Yes, it was a compliment, but an awkward one and one that can certainly set off an insecure or jealous streak in someone so prone. Someone more confident or secure will usually say something like "And he has good taste in women, too!"

For future reference, a better way to phrase such a compliment is "Wow, you two make a handsome couple!" This sounds less like you're scoping out her husband and more like you're admiring the both of them.

Since you have to spend time with her over the next month, I would seek her out and apologize. Tell her you intended to compliment them as a couple and did not mean to offend. Hopefully this will sooth the ruffled feathers and make the next month less uncomfortable.

Maybe he's a serial cheater that screws moms and she doesn't want it to happen again. I know a number of dudes like that.

It sounds flirtatious and reduces him to a 'body'.

If a man saw another man's wife walking towards them and made a comment - damn that is a smoking hot woman. Many women would object to that. The difference would be that the guy's friend would be proud he had the smoking hot wife.

Someone said this to me once and I thought it was a nice compliment. Who knows why it hit a nerve with her - PPs above have given all the suggestions I could think of. Next lesson just say, "hey, hope I didn't offend!" Then move on and assume she has issues. Lesson learned!

This. OP - are you originally from another country?
Europe? I am, and this totally could have happened to me.

This is really good advice!

No need to say anything! I would just pretend that I did not notice her reaction. And then casually slip in in a subsequent conversation (and at an appropriate time) what the PP suggested - "You two make a very good-looking couple".

It was kinda inappropriate to say, but it seems the real issue lies within her and her marriage and insecurities.

Go figure.

Ask Jenna Darwin-Tatum.

I am sure this happens to her at least 10x day.

She did you a favor. There's a ton of crazy insecure bitches out there. She just rapidly self identified.

My DH is in shape and hot. I get it all the time, plus women acting stupid and falling all over him. It doesn't bother me. I actually find it hot.

I've said this before to women. I don't think it's creepy or put of line. Hell, I said it to my employer.
