Talk to me about personal bankruptcy

Two years ago I was paying $1200 a month for daycare in downtown DC. Yes, hard to find, but no, not impossible. I'm assuming you can find something up in SS for less.

You need to learn how to increase your planning skills. How were you planning to re-pay the student loans when you got them? How were you planning to pay for child care when you became pregnant? You sound a bit entitled, but as you say, that attitude hasn't gotten you to a good place. Time for change. You can do it. Sometimes life kicks you in the ass, but you created your predicament. Luckily you have a good salary, and in 10 years you can have the student loans paid off, child will be in public school, and then you'll be in much better shape. It's not that far out.

Well I hadn't planned on getting pregant. Planned on family helping when I did (as they assured me they would) and I planned on my child's father helping.
My issue is only the private student loans. I thought the were dischargeable

2nd - please take some responsibility here. Your loan bills are not going to disappear, as much as you want to ignore them. You have a great income and I bet you are more than capable of paying them down if you really try.

I'm the poster who stated above that you can find a one bedroom with laundry for 1500. In DC proper there are English basement rentals for that approximate amount with their own W/D and even some/all utilities included. Look into those and you can live in a nice neighborhood for a reasonable price.

Where? They've not been on craigslist , livelovely, or realtor.com for the last 45 days. I've spent evey lunch looking. Normally there is a laundry inbuildng (basement) especially if utilities are included. I've unfortunately learned the hard way my 2 year old can not be left alone for 45 seconds it takes to dump trash no

With all due respect, you're going to have to become a little less helpless if you ever want your financial situation to improve.

Generally, they are not, as a simple Google search would have informed you. Unless there is something you are not telling us, your financial situation on a 130k salary isn't dire enough that you shouldn't be able to make the minimum monthly payments on the private loans. What are they? Also, your take-home amount is pretty small; why is it fluctuating so much month to month? Examine your withholding.

What major causes 2300/mo in student loan debt and pays 100k

OP - post your paycheck withholdings. it makes no sense that you are taking home so little. And why are you wasting your time adjusting witholdings every month? Don't you get socked at tax time then? My goodness we have to work on your personal finance skills. Glad you are asking for help.

No chance you can bunk with relatives for a year, right?

I checked that thread every thing was low income or not in dc

I have retirement savings loan I am paying back at 200 a check. Health savings 2500 for year and dependent are 5000.
I had been still trying to max retirement contributions because at 42 I thought there might be a day I would want to retire and I have a match up to 5%. But if I am paying my loans for 30 years I won't be able tom retire so I don't need to contribute to that I guess.

OP, frankly I don't have a lot of sympathy for you. You are maxing out your retirement. Decrease that and pay off the car. Done. If we can make less than that by about $20,000 and feed a family of four and still save for retirement so can you.

You can't double count your dependent care savings and child care expenses. Are you fed? Don't your government loans get reduced after x number of years of service anyway?
Anonymous
OP - can you post your current expenses? Especially rent, childcare, car? I'm not really getting your withholding either but I guess if you're saving a huge percentage for retirement that's great.

All the "cant's" don't add up.

You need to live in DC, have a car, have safe childcare, and have a one bedroom.

So move to Fort Totten, Brookland, Capitol Hill, Takoma, or Upper Connecticut Ave.

You should sell your car and pay for zip car monthly. Use metro or bus to get to daycare or work. Find a new one that's safe but on your route. Maybe a nanny share? Stay in DC to get free preschool when your kid is 3.

You have options.

Is your child 2? Move to Brookland, rent an apartment. Maybe no laundry in apartment, my heart bleeds for you. Deal. Get a bike with a seat for the kid. Send the kid to Scrilli School, a neighborhood daycare / preschool that everyone loves and costs $500 a month. Reduce your retirement savings until you are on your feet. You're welcome!

Double posting. Another alternative would be the apartments at fort totten. I've known 2 people who have lived there. Dunno about laundry but they are pretty new so maybe. It's a pretty quiet area. Another local beloved daycare is St Ann's, about a mile away. Should be $1k or less for 2 yo.

Please take all this good advice you're getting!

What do I do with the 2 year old while I do laundry? You'd be the same ahole posting here saying I was a bad mom for leaving my kid alone or calling sending her to school with dirty clothes. Furthermore Brookland has too many rapes. That is not the childhood experience she's getting.
Thanks
