Does anyone else feel like sitcoms today are not nearly as funny as in the past?

I remember being allowed to stay up and watch The Cosby Show on Thursday nights at 8pm with my parents and then hgoing to bed. Other nights it was Growing Pains, Family Ties, Different Strokes etc. We don't have that anymore. All of the sitcoms are clearly for adults while the shows on Disney Channel are clearly not. Sitcoms in the 80's were for the whole family.

I agree with this! There isn't much on that a family can watch together.

I agree that I never liked Everybody Loves Raymond. And, I never really got into Seinfeld either.

I do like Modern Family and The Middle though.
King of Queens is great.
Big Bang Theory

I loved Kate and Allie (yeah, flame away).

DH, our kids (9&10) and I watch:
The Big Bang Theory
The Neighbors (actually quite funny though the premise is stupid)
The Middle
New Girl
The Mindy Project
Brooklyn 99
Modern Family

I did watch, and like, a few of the new ones out there.

The Michael J. Fox show
Dads
The Cray ones

I will check out

The Millers and Sean Saves the World.

I'm actually really liking the programing so far this season. If only I could figure out a way to make TV watching a full time job.

Agree with PP that Portlandia is just hilarious! Wilfred is funny and poignant. The League is extremely funny! It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is hit or miss but when it is funny I often have to pause the tv while I laugh. I still love The Simpsons too. I really only watch cable. I have only seen the Big Bang Theory once and it reminded me too much of school so I didn't find it too funny.

I only watch premium series these days---HBO, Netflix, etc.

Regular TV is crap,,crappy sitcoms and filled with stupid reality and dancing singing competitions.

They were constantly talking about sex, homosexuality, orgasms, and other "adult" themes that wouldn't fly today, because of some puritanical person screaming "but think of the children!" The show is hilarious when I can watch it, often dark and suggestive even sometimes vulgar. These days people freak out if they hear an an academic discussion with real, biological terms - it's like we've gone back in time.

It is not the puritanical people. They are already tuned into Veggie Tales.

It is the PC crowd that gets offended by everything. None of the shows want to offend any group and risk getting boycotted. We have gotten so PC we are afraid to laugh.

You must have a nice MIL.

If you had one like the rest of us, you would find Everyone Loves Raymond hilarious too

I wish I got HBO so I could watch Veep. That looks pretty funny.

Has anyone caught Lisa Kudrow's Showtime show Web Therapy? I don't watch it religiously, but the episodes I have seen are hysterical.

Suburgatory is also funny, although they haven't given a start date for that one yet.

I have to admit to liking a few of the Disney Channel shows. I liked Wizards of Waverly Place and Good Luck Charlie. They are better than many of the network comedies, honestly.

Another Disney Channel show that is pretty funny is Phineas and Ferb. It has the kind of humor that works on multiple levels, kind of like Toy Story. Even my 65 year old dad admits to laughing at this show when he watches with my kiddo.

Arrested Development

These shows are streets ahead of "Everybody Loves Raymond." (I shudder to think anyone actually laughs out loud at that inanity.)

Streets ahead! I love you.

I agree with this! I don't think this show gets enough credit. I think people assume it's stupid, but it's actually pretty funny and well-done.

Though, I can't get on board with The Mindy Project. That show is just terrible, IMO.

I feel like many of the new sitcoms are trying to find humor in bad parenting...so white trash

Everybody Loves Raymond was terrible. Same for Big Bang Theory.

Parks and Rec is too self-aware for its own good.

Love Always Sunny, Wilfred, Louie (come back Louie)! and Bob's Burgers.

New Girl is ok. ZD is annoying. Cannot watch the Mindy Project bc I find Mindy equally annoying.

This is why we have so much reality shit on TV - the masses don't want to THINK about their programs...at all. They just want to be vegetables.

Right? We all know that's what DCUM is for.
