janney families going private instead?

I don't have statistics, but I'd guess that there are a lot more Ward 3 in privates than in charters. I've never met anyone in our neighborhood (or friends in other areas of Ward 3) that attend a charter. There are many who attend IB and many who attend private but you don't see a lot who attend charters.

+1. I don't know a single family in my neighborhood with kids at charter. Lots of IB kids at dcps, at least until 3rd grade with some staying until 5th.

Nah. Why would Ward 3 kid drive across town to attend a charter when their neighborhood school that they can walk to is perfectly fine and lots of people move to Ward 3 just for the public schools there.

The 1/2 kids who attend charters are from Ward 5 and the like. I live in Ward 5 and don't know a single family that sends their kid to their inbound DCPS. They either drive to a WoP DCPS or charter or private.

Yet another person who is sure there are very few ward 3 residents driving across town, 2x a day, to attend a charter.

I've lived here 20 years, am very involved in, let's call it "neighborhood activities," and I can think of exactly 2 kids who go to a charter: an ethnic Chinese kid at YY and a girl at Latin.

Think about it: no attraction to the whole "free daycare" thing to really to drive such a decision. Also, even IF a particular charter is offering something compelling that is absent in, say, Murch, it's unlikely it's so valuable that it's worth the additional 360 hours of driving to realize that marginal advantage.

I know of one Ward 3 kid at Basis. I know of approximately 150 kids from our IB school who have gone to Deal in the last two years.

We are friends with an AU Park family that pulled their daughters from Janney and sent them to Basis.

"pulled" ? Both girls (twins?) started 5th grade at Janney but were "pulled" out mid year and sent to BASIS 5th grade? Last year? Nope.

A fair number of Ward 3 kids who are IB for Hardy attend Basis or Latin.

You are lying. There were no twins pulled from Janney and sent to Basis for 5th grade.

That family definitely had some $$$$$. New school AU Park bling, baby. I was, like, dude, why are you living here?????

Umm, because the houses cost a ton of money now. Unless you bought over ten years ago, AU Park ain't cheap anymore. If I had a government salary, I could not afford my house.

Dude, you missed my point. If you have all that money, why would you live in AU Park. They all think their school is the dawg, but it's just an average MoCo elementary. Truth.

Read the post carefully before you call me out or I'll come at you like a wooden cuckoo bird in a clock.

I'd consider AU Park if I had a ton of money. You can get a nice home and not have a commute with a public school path that works and you're close to privates.

Maybe they just were "pulled" tas in did not start - the fifth grade. Mann parent here who whose kids are at and will go to Basis. We had a set of twin girls who started Basis last year, and there were at least ten Mann kids who were in their cohort. Don't know about the Mann numbers at Basis for fifth this year, but I imagine they are growing. We also pulled a child out of Latin to go to Basis when it opened, and do know a few families whose kids are still there and happy. The days of all those at Mann and Janney going private in 4th or 6th are over, and I imagine our kids will give the ones applying from shi shi private school a real run for their money when it comes time for colleges to pick and choose.

The site referred to on another thread offers a clear count by the numbers, but I would also mention that there are kids at Basis whose parents pulled them from private schools to attend, including the British School. I expect that as its reputation grows there will be many more willing to take that risk and save their money for other things...

DUDE - because it's about as close-in to the city as you can get and still get a home to fit your kids, AND a good public school, AND walk to the metro and other stuff etc. DUDE.
