janney families going private instead?

How common is this?

I have friends IB for Janney who have children at NPS, Holy Trinity, Sheridan, WIS and a charter.

Interesting. We have friends IB for Janney that chose GDS.

Its becoming less and less common to leave Janney for private, if that's what the question is. I'd say years ago a good percentage would leave in third and fifth grade, and now you can count them on one hand.

Our kids are at Sheridan, which is quite small, and I can think of about 10 families off the top of my head who live IB for Janney.

To PPs point, one kid went all the way thru Janney and then bypassed Deal.

Look, every neighborhood in the DC metro area has families that choose private, it doesn't matter how great the public school option is. For some people, private school is the only option. It says nothing about the public school in their community.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but there are lots of inbound families that so to private, but they are the minority.

Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 4 kids in DC's private lower elementary grade class that live in bounds for Janney.

There has always been a substantial number of children IB for Janney who go to private school. Thank goodness for that because, otherwise, where would they all fit?

I can think of a number of families who do private.
As real estate in AU Park has risen in cost, wealthier families (senior law associates or partners, investment bankers, etc) have moved in and they tend to do private. You don't find much of this at Janney-there it's more the 2 government attorney famlies, policy types.
It's the ones that would have traditionally lived in Wesley Heights that don't even consider Janney. Obviously this isn't true for everyone but it's definitely a trend I've noticed.

I think you're exaggerating PP. Not everyone at Janney is a government type. There was a couple law firm partners in my kids class last year. One of them hosted a parent get-together. That family definitely had some $$$$$. New school AU Park bling, baby. I was, like, dude, why are you living here?????

There are three eras of Janney parents roaming around Jamboree. The Old School group laments the fact that they can't helicopter around the hallways until 9:30. Transition Parents love the new leadership and copter around in their own way: fundraising. The New School Group are high achievers who moved to AU Park because they think the school is perfect and don't need/want to put any time in.

This accurate and funny. We are in cohort number 2. I hope at least cohort number 3 donate the requested amount and contribute to the fundraisers.

The New School Group are high achievers, just like previous arrivals in AU Park were, but different in that they chose corporate careers designed to make bank over non-profit work, academia and journalism.

There, I fixed this for you.
