OP, what schools did the people at Maddux recommend? They know the schools in the area well and are always willing to give input.
Like 19:22 I am wondering why you want to leave Maddux. They provide support for all the things you mention. |
| OP here, thanks! We LOVE Maddux, but think our child might be ready for a mainstream school for kindergarten. |
| We might not leave Maddux, but want to research all of our options. |
| Does anyone have any experience with St. Andrew's or WES?? |
| OP again, these are always tough choices. Impossible to know whether a child will be available for learning in a mainstream environment, but we never know until we try. |
| OP, the kinds of supports you are seeking will not be available in a mainstream school, so you need to decide if your DC can do without them. |
Maddux is mainstream. If my kid was 100% typical and could handle the busiest public school and excel but I had the money for Maddux, I would still pick Maddux. |
Since you are currently at a school that meets all of your child's needs, why not stay until your kid is old enough for a complete neuropsych evaluation, 6/7 yrs old, and go from there. The neuropsych eval will give you a clear picture of what supports and services your kid needs or not to succeed in school and asking Maddux for school suggestions is also a better idea than asking random strangers who do not know your child for suggestions. Not to be mean but from your list of criteria you want in a school, it is not likely that your child will be accepted at a mainstream private school. Most private K require a play date/observation and you have to ask if your child's issues are minor enough that a mainstream school can meet their needs. Why the push to mainstream? |
The age was not posted until after this post. SN parents play ahead ... way ahead sometimes so still relevant. |
It's chartered as a mainstream school but don't fool yourself. Parents send their kid to Maddux for a reason and it's not b/c the kid is 100% typical. |
I got that impression when I went to their open house. Most of the time, the lady was emphasizing how mainstream they were. She made it sound like it was for a child with 0 behavior issues, almost 0 language issues, and just a little shy. I might be exaggerating a little, but not much. Plus, she said that a lot of the SN kids had typical siblings going to the school. |
Did she say how many "typical" kids they have? Sounds like Maddux is positioning itself as a SN lite school. Too bad since those kids will do just as well going to PAC... Anyone have exmissions data for Maddux? |
Isnt PAC fairfax's SN preschool? I don't think maddux gets many kids from fairfax bc of its location. Plus, it goes beyond preschool. Only 15 or so kids graduate from maddux each year, so exmissions information wouldnt tell you anything. It varies from year to year, but a mix of SN schools like lab, public schools with or without IEPs, and mainstream but not cutthroat private schools. |
| If you aren't speaking from personal experience with your child, at Maddux, then please stop speculating. It's not useful. It's just chatter. |
Don't really have the money, but send my child to Maddux. We make it work, and are able to write a lot of it off. DC has ADHD. So do a lot of other kids who don't get the benefit of the special attention and social learning that is taught at Maddux. We feel fortunate. |
