Why don't we get any days off for Easter?

To be clear, MoCo schools close on 2 of the Jewish holidays. They don't close for Passover. If Passover should fall during spring break, great. If not, too bad. Last year it did not coincide.

Which ones? I assume Rosh Hoshanah and Yom Kippur? If it's the same standard as the feds shutting down for Christmas (i.e. such a high rate of leave that really, what's the point?) then I think it makes complete sense. But I assume this doesn't preclude a Muslim employee asking for Eid-Al-Fitr or Ramadan, or a Christian asking off for Good Friday. At least, I would hope so.

Yes, the 1st day of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Although this year I think Yom Kippur falls on a Saturday.

Why are they closed on any religious holidays?

That's why the rest of the country should start celebrating Patriot's Day, which occasionally does fall on Easter Monday. Man, do I miss that holiday.

Evacuation Day is another very important holiday which should be observed.

There are like 10 prior threads on this topic. MCPS closes for Jewish holidays because when they didn't, they had too many teachers taking leave and not enough subs to fill the slots. It costs too much to keep schools open with subs than to just close them on those days, because of the high number of Jewish employees.

Yes! And the holidays should all be on Monday or Friday.

I think all religious holidays should be stricken from the federal calendar, and I am a Christian. But my guess is that Christmas is on the list because so many people would have to be given an exemption that it renders opening the government more trouble and more expensive than it is worth. You can hardly say the same of Good Friday. Most Christians don't even go to a service on Good Friday, so it's hardly the same.

+1

Very few people are atheists, and even many of them celebrate religious holidays.

Orthodox Jew here - Trust me, you dont.

I have to use at least 13 days (Rosh Hashana-2, Yom Kippur-1, Succot-2, Shmini Atzeret-2, Passover-4, Shavuot-2) leave per year for all the holidays and that is assuming I dont need to travel anywhere, as I cant travel on the holiday and usually have to take off the days before and after to travel (except when we drove in at 9-1:30am last night from NY) so I could work today. Employers are generally good about letting people use leave, but the work doesnt stop and its not excused, its just part of your vacation days.

I love the holidays and the traditions but we havent had extra days to vacation in years.

Schools also close for snow days. How is this fair to rodeo riders?
