Why don't we get any days off for Easter?

Exactly and in UK, they also get the day after christmas off, it's called boxing day. That's the day they exchange gifts/open presents. I should move.

Where do you come from? In America, these have never been national holidays, nor should they be since the Easter holiday proper falls on a Sunday. Most employers and schools will provide a religious exemption if you want to take Good Friday off from work or school.

I am a Christian and I am sick to death of the whining about this. All of the Holy Week services outside of the Easter Sunday mass at my church are in the evenings. There is absolutely no obligation to observe all day; only to participate in services. If you can't participate in services because your church doesn't hold them outside of work or school hours, then you need to take that up with your church and stop whining on an anonymous forum. Enough already.

Yeah, but in the UK all the holidays are scrunched up between Xmas and early May. Then there is only ONE holiday between May and the end of December. I hated it. We actually have 1 more national holiday here, and in general they are nicely sprinkled throughout the year.

"Easter Monday" is not a holiday or even a concept in most of this country. Never heard of it before moving to DC. Easter is always on Sunday and Good Friday services are in the evening, so there's no reason for days off.

Ding ding! Exactly. I grew up in a very Catholic area and we never, ever had Good Friday off of work or school. EVER. This is just more entitled DC people whining about something because hey, if it's a day ending in "day," I have to be whining about how the world owes my entitled ass something. Jeez.

Yes! And the holidays should all be on Monday or Friday.

Some people are hard-core about Easter. My parents are crazy busy that week preparing food and going to church and it would be nice a couple days to spend the holiday with our family. There's nothing wrong with whining about not getting a holiday for it, not everyone gets that many vacation days over the year. My mom missed a lot of stuff when I was growing up because she had shift work and few vacation days.

I think all religious holidays should be stricken from the federal calendar, and I am a Christian. But my guess is that Christmas is on the list because so many people would have to be given an exemption that it renders opening the government more trouble and more expensive than it is worth. You can hardly say the same of Good Friday. Most Christians don't even go to a service on Good Friday, so it's hardly the same.

DH's country is half Muslim and half Christian and everyone gets all of the Christian and Muslim holidays off. The reason is to allow people to travel to their hometowns and for religious services (which are a bigger deal there for most people). For Easter everything shuts down for pretty much the whole week. It's nice but the large number of holidays cuts affects productivity. Different priorities I guess.

Why do MoCo public schools close on every major Jewish holiday? Please explain how that is fair to Christians?

I believe this was historically due to a high number of Jewish teachers would would need the days off - which adversly impacts the schools.

Anyhow, exactly what holy days are you unable to attend? As PPs have said, Good Friday services are at night, and Easter falls on a Sunday.

But apparently I'm also a douchebag for speaking common sense. Go figure.
