But that TJ doesn't start until 9th grade, so there are no areas that feed into it for 7th grade. I think you need a different plan. |
| ^Most of the kids that test into TJ are from Fairfax county AAP programs (Chesterbrook et al) which start in 3rd grade. |

You know this is a DC thread. So, you are moving. check. |
May move to VA for jr high school from a DC charter. The thread asks what people are doing for middle school. |
| I know this is not the point of this thread, but I can't help saying that I find it revoltingly oblivious that someone would characterize $125,000 income as lower middle class in DC, apparently without irony. |
Agree. When you look at the profile of the feeder schools for Hardy, it's only a matter of time until it becomes the next Deal. Boundary redraw this Spring can only help. |
+1. Parent of toddlers, IB for JKLMM Hardy feeder, praying this is true. I'll admit to sheer ignorance as to why it hasn't happened already. How is Deal different from Hardy? Oh, and on topic: HHI $250k, planning on DCPS through at least 4th grade and then totally mystified as to what will come next. Oldest child just turned 2, so we're hoping to witness the sort of evolution described by the quoted PPs. |
I started the thread and I too am a bit shocked that someone considered $400k + within the realm of "middle middle class". But I've also been away from the Northeast for awhile, and as you know us East Coasters are oblivious to what is "middle" for the majority of the US. DC and NYC and Boston are different, no getting around that. |

Wow. I can't believe how out of touch people are in terms of income. Median household income in DC is under $62k. (See http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/11000.html )
How in the world is $200k middle middle or lower middle class?! |
Right now I feed into Deal and Wilson. There is a chance that we could be switched to Hardy but I'm OK with that. I have a few more years before middle school but our plan is to stick with Deal or Hardy, and then Wilson. I suppose if my kids turn out to be prodigies or sports stars or something we could consider a private but it could only happen if we got a scholarship. At our income level and mortgage, we can't afford private school for 2 kids on our own. |
Our income is below the median any way you look at it But someone on another recent thread cited a stat that put the median HHI for a family of 4 in DC at $107k. I looked it up because I was somewhat shocked & slightly depressed by it and found it somewhere, but now I can't remember where. Anyone?
|
| Aren't we on DC public school forum? This puts you one step above of being ghettto-fabulous financial line. |
Wow. That was unnecessarily harsh--have not found the YY folks to be pushy at all except for the obvious malcontents. |
Yes, the HUD median income is $107k http://www.huduser.org/portal/datasets/il/il2013/2013summary.odn |
| This subject gets raised way too much. Yes "middle income" is subjective but $100k in DC is not the same as $100k in Atlanta. DC govt considers $60k low income. That is how much/little you have to make to qualify for low income property tax abatement when you buy a house...no prop taxes for 5 years. Yes, the median income can be $50k or $100k depending on household size, but you also have almost 20% of people living below the median which is 8% higher than the US average. If you are talking about wards 1-6, the median household income is likely more mid 100s. |
