Lots of old white men up there. What? No black Catholics? No Asian Catholics?

One of the most influential cardinals is from Ghana. Another from Philipines. Get your facts straight. Biggest growth of the church is in Africa.

Yes, I know that. So, why has there never been a black pope? And why, amongst ALL those faces standing next to the pope, we're there. I people of color?

The new pope is Latino.

I do not think this word means what you think it means.

At least he is Non-European, even if of European descent. It's a step away from European dominated Church control.

And he is pretty crazy already, selecting a name never used before.

I heard he was second in balloting in 2005.

The guy is a Jesuit, if he can at least be progressive on the non-family life issues, it's a step up ... maybe some focus/care might be given to children after they are actually born.

Likely not.

There's a new name, a new old white male, but nothing will ever change in the Catholic Church.

this

chris matthews was talking about all the good the church did after world war 2 - great, but let's not forget how they actually aided the nazis, too?

Nothing, if you understand that your personal conservatism should never be forced upon others.

Word is that he wants to end the practice of refusing baptism to children of single mothers. OK, I'll admit, this is not earth shattering progressiveness in action, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

He's a jesuit, give him a chance.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but I'd still hope for a pope that doesn't blame gay rights on "satan" directly.

So, best-case scenario, he might change a few things to move the Catholic Church into the 20th century? Awesome. Aim high.

I just wonder why any mentally functioning adult would put stock in any of this bullshit.

And it all comes crashing down.... I had a moment, just a small, tiny moment comprised of a glimmer, a mere glimmer of hope.

Unlike you who wants to force your liberalism on others? Truth is that church is growing around the world away from crazy leftist wackos in the USA like you.

And I have some very Catholic family members, too. I love them, but I truly don't understand.

Yes, in that sense the Cardinals did a very Republican thing: They chose the runner-up from the last time.

Can you point me to one case where someone's been forced to marry someone of the same sex? Or liberals forcing people to get abortions? Go ahead. I'll wait.
