New Pope from Argentina

Anonymous
Why is the BREAKING NEWS? Why do other news stories need to be interrupted for this? I get that it's news and that it's a big deal to Catholics, but shouldn't it be with just the news of the day?

Not so important that all other news stories must be interrupted or halted to go on and on about this guy speaking in another language and then the news anchor saying we will translate in a few minutes???

Lots of old white men up there. What? No black Catholics? No Asian Catholics?

One of the most influential cardinals is from Ghana. Another from Philipines. Get your facts straight. Biggest growth of the church is in Africa.

Yes, I know that. So, why has there never been a black pope? And why, amongst ALL those faces standing next to the pope, we're there. I people of color?

The new pope is Latino.

You may be a bit ignorant but there are over a billion people worldwide who are Catholic. On every continent. So yes this is breaking news. Or you may just be a troll who wants to get fed.

Not a surprise considering that the majority of the cardinals are very conservative. What's his name legacy I guess.

Argentines don't generally consider themselves Latino, do they?

No, actually, he's the son of Italian immigrants. He is Italian.

Not really--his parents were Italian immigrants.

I think this a step towards more diversity in the church, but you have to understand that change will come very slowly. Of course there has never been a black pope--we just got our first black President. Who do you think is more conservative/resistant to change, American voters or the Catholic church?

Hey the church is 50% female but that doesn't translate to actual power.

I don't actually see much African influence in the Vatican itself. Still exceedingly European.

I wonder if the new pope will ever excommunicate one, just one of the church's rapist priests?

Likely not.

There's a new name, a new old white male, but nothing will ever change in the Catholic Church.

Almost all of Central and South Americans are Catholic. Not just those of Spanish descent.

if I remember based on the last time we went through this, aren't the African Cardinals even MORE conservative than the Europeans?

The comments remind me of people arguing over Snooki being of Chilean descent but raised by an Italian family and considering herself to be Italian.
