Mundo Verde is the Best!

Their whole point is to boost and run, and, oh, call people "haters" who challenge their wasting people's time with their unhelpful / trollish rants. Shame, really. Between that and angry parents weirdly protesting, makes normal folks question what's up with the school. Between all of the yoga and free breakfast, I hope there's some halfway decent parents with half a brain over there. Also, for those that don't know, there's been complaints from parents about how legit the Spanish immersion is. An American college grad. who studied a little Spanish hardly qualifies as someone to teach the language.

The MV poster indicated that many of the teachers are NATIVE speakers:
http://mundoverdepcs.org/our-team/
Teachers come from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Chile, El Salvador, Peru, etc.

None of MV teachers have just "studied a little Spanish." That's an inaccurate statment if this was meant to pertain to MV.

Great - would love to send my kid there, but the lottery chances are slim. Anyone interested in starting another Spanish immersion school with me??

New MV Parent here. I moved my child from another immersion school and can say that MV's immersion program seems to be working very well. I'm also very impressed with the implementation of the expeditionary learning and the way both math and writing are being taught at the K level. The art and music offerings seem better than those at our previous school.

And, for working parents, the after care at MV is head and shoulders above what I have seen elsewhere.

Are there any teachers that are not native speakers and learned the language in college? Many of them may be native speakers, but it's been going around that some are not. Anyone have the true story here?

I am a native Spanish speaker. I know some of the MV teachers are not native speakers, but these non-native Spanish speakers all have excellent and fluent Spanish! They did not just learn the language in college, but also lived and/or worked abroad. MV has the non-native speakers teaching the English classes. At MV, while the three year olds and four years have their classes in 100% Spanish - the first graders and K's have two classrooms (One for English and the other for Spanish), both with a main teacher and a teaching fellow.

Can you explain what "it's been going around that some are not." Are you a mV parent? Do you know Spanish? Not sure where this question is coming from? Are you referring to MV in particular or bilingual schools in general?

Ha -- reading all these troll/not a troll threads makes it really clear to me that some people have too much time on their hands and serious anger issues? What's the big deal if someone comes on to the forum to boost their child's school? Personally as a parent, I come to the board to see if parents of children at a particular school seem to be happy with it. I don't take their good fortune as hurtful bragging, but really useful info? who are you angry witches calling everyone a troll? What did you do before there were anonymous message boards to call people names? Sorry, I have just never gotten this "troll" business. Who would do that -- for what reason?

There are some “trolls” on this forum. One's who make up things, ones who over exaggerates, the know it all’s so forth and so on. Especially the ones who want you to take the bait and see what type of responses or reactions they will get.

Anonymous wrote:A few reason why MV IS THE BEST:

1) Full immersion for pre-K 3 AND pre-K 3
2) NATIVE Spanish speakers from various countries throughout the world.
3) NOT ONLY is this a full immersion school, the SECOND focus of the school is the ENVIRONMENT! The school is making these children vary aware of the envirnmont and the world they live in.
4) ACTIVE parent/family involvement - it's almost hard to keep up with all of the committees, meetings and CLASSES For the PARENTS.
5) TRUE DIVERSITY - people from all over the globe attend MV!
6) STRICT NO JUNK FOOD POLICY - the school provides FREE organic or nutricious breakfast for all; the other meals are just as great provided by REVOLUTION foods!
7) YOGA classes for ALL
8) ART classes for all
9) MUSIC classes for all
10) SMILING FACES from all MV staff - it is really amazing. Either they are smiling from ear to ear or they are hard at work - I have never seen such hard working teachers and staff.
....HERE IS MY TOP TEN LIST - WELL, PERHAPS NOT THE TOP TEN, BUT THE FIRST THAT CAME TO MY MIND....I COULD GO ON AND ON!

THANK YOU MUNDO VERDE - WE LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO THEY TEACH PRE-K IN ALL CAPS???????? IF SO, I'M SO THERE!!!!!!

The school is great, but too much trouble to get into and too far. We'll stick with WoftP school.
Our kid learned his languages at home.

Try for Bruce Monroe in Park View. Up and coming and true immersion-one day spanish and one day english. I don't have my kid in there yet but the rate the neighborhood is gentirfying its improving for sure. More importantly, the principal is VERY welcoming to "new comers' and reaches out to allow anyone to set up a time to observe the classrooms during the school day.
How is that for being a booster!!??

Is MV adding more classes this year since they are moving to a new building and will presumably have more room?

Yes. Both this year and next.

Not sure this matches what I heard at the open house. It sounded like the would be operating this coming year in only a portion of their space, so at least would not be expanding pk. Is that right?

HeeHee, not the poster you are responding to, but there are some other DCPS immersion schools that are on the up and coming. I think the real reason folks want to start up a new immersion charter is to exclude one's they want to keep out.
