If you would like to be part of the solution please sign the petition to charge out of county residents to use our park

http://www.change.org/petitions/the-governor-of-va-charge-out-of-county-residents-to-use-clemyjontri-park-like-burke-lake#

Clemyjontri Park, located at 6317 Georgetown Pike in McLean, is one of the first large-scale parks in the United States specifically planned and built so children with and without disabilities can play side-by-side.

It has a two-acre playground with carousel where children who use wheelchairs, walkers or braces, or who have sensory or developmental disabilities can enjoy a complete and unrestricted playground experience.
Use of the park has exceeded all expectations with nearly 200,000 children and adults visiting Clemyjontri each year.

The resulting wear and tear on the park and its unique play equipment and surfacing material require continuing and expensive maintenance and repairs.

On any given day there are many out of state licensed vehicles parked in the parking lot (often the ratio is (1/4 to 1/2 out of state license plates).

Fairfax county residents are in one way or another paying for maintenance through county taxes but out of county residents are using the park without compensating Fairfax County.

To assist with funding for maintenance, out of county residents should pay a fee to enter the park. Such fees are already being charged at other Fairfax County parks such as Burke Lake.

If the park continues to be over used and worn out without adequate money towards maintenance and repairs, the park could deteriorate and eventually parts of it may shut down due to safety concerns resulting from a lack of adequate maintenance.

Before everyone labels me a terrorist against the disabled the majority of out of state users are NOT disabled. A waiver could be granted for the disabled.

Is this recommendation supported by the FFX Park Authority? Are they projecting a funding shortage re: the park?

As an initial supporter of Clemyjontri Park, I think it would be wrong to charge out of county people for using it. I would be OK with a parking fee for all people using the lot. Something nominal - $2 or such - if there are costs to be defrayed for the park. I don't want to be charged when I go to Glen Echo, or Cabin John Regional Park, or anywhere else around here.

Burke Lake charges out of county residents what's wrong with that? Everyone already pays to use the carousel

Let's be real. All the people who are in support of the park charging a fee are not concerned with the county budget. They somehow feel entitled to have the park all to themselves, and are under the illusion that there would be a quiet, empty parking lot waiting for them at all times if the park were to charge a fee.

Those parks do not have the maintenance costs that Clemyjontri has so there would no be no need to charge a fee. Some other parks (aka Burke lake or the Zoo) charge money for usage whether is from parking or entry. If you look at the awesome setup of Clemyjontri there are soo many pieces of equipment, the entire grounds is covered in safety rubber and the unique nature of it is the reason for high maintenance. No other park or playground in the area yet alone maybe the country is like this. I would even say this would almost be considered a pay per use amusement park if it wasn't for the graciousness of the lady who donated the land.

Guess the OP isnt thie only one who will be traveling in from out of the neighorhood to go to the park. Maybe all the pp's who were against this should walk around their own neighborhood to find a true local/neighborhood playground!!!!

Oh my gosh, someone I just met last week was telling me about this place in St. Louis (another of "America's Coolest Playgrounds" as listed in the link above). How cool. It does look like a really interesting place to visit. She told me that adults can do it too in the evenings (?).

Ok, sorry, thread hijack over. . .

Only people living near Clemyjontri could have such high ideas of what their *neighborhood* park should be. For the love.

Anyway, I used to work out that way- nothing is all that convenient, but after hearing so many recommendations for the Italian Store, I'm going to check it out- and I'm not the OP!

If you're walking distance to Clemyjontri, it is your neighborhood park. And it is tiremsome on weekends...and some weekdays. I end up driving to other parks.

Curious that you can see in the pic about 16 handicapped parking spots and just one is taken. The rest of the lot is about 75% full. When the park first opened we always saw disabled kids and adults enjoying the park. It is too bad if it's been so overrun by able bodies that the disabled and others with special needs can't enjoy the park anymore.
