We don't keep soda or juice in the house, unless they are leftovers from a party.
We serve water or milk (2%) with meals. DH and I drink seltzer, unflavored with a wedge of lemon or lime. At school, DS drinks unflavored skim or low fat milk. DS's "treat" drink is milk warmed up with a teaspoon of dark chocolate syrup. We consume a LOT of fresh fruit. |
I agree. My kids drink water or sparkling water, and I usually do the same, but occasionally I have a beer or a glass of wine or a soda and my kids see me drink them as well. I don't think they have been scarred and they understand that those are adult drinks. |
I'll take a stab...tater-tot casserole, drive through, and hamburger helper. |

If you don't want your kids drinking soda at dinner then you should also stop as well. Don't teach your kids hypocrisy.
To answer your question: We all drink water with meals. |

I love how juice and soda have become as objectionable as smoking in the car with the windows closed. I wonder how far this trend can go? Next year, it's going to be about evian versus san pelligrino. "I can't believe you give your kids volvic! Don't you know how the minerals in certain waters can affect brain development??? So trashy!"
Anyhoo, OP, I also drink soda (and I'm not a teenager, PP; my parents were very strict about these things, and so now that I'm an adult I can do whatever I want! Ha!), and my kid has a choice of OJ or water. She chooses water about three-quarters of the time. It's important to give kids reasonable choices, instead of mandating every last detail of their lives. I will say, though, that when I buy juice, it's actual juice. The stuff that comes out when you squish a fruit. Not artificially-fruit-flavored sugar water. |
| 7 y.o. DD gets water, which is what DH and I drink. Every once in a while when we have pizza, we have soda or iced tea (lipton mix), and DD can have root beer or iced tea. We have never offered her juice except in her lunch box during camp. Never at dinner. She has grown to prefer water to drink. She has digestive issues with milk, so the only time she gets that is when she buys lunch at school, which is maybe twice a week. |

Milk, juice (which they may have once a day if they haven't had any heroin), or water.
On weekends, if my DH is having a soda with lunch, they can have one too. Not sure why the PP mentioned how much fruit they eat, but we eat a lot of fruit, too. I assume this makes us awesome somehow? Or at least not constipated? Let's talk about poop! And awesomeness! And awesome pooping! |
That is probably because you are irredeemably vulgar. Hyper-sweetened beverages are designed to appeal to the lowest elements. Adults drink water, or wine, or beer, or tea with their meals, not carbonated refreshments, as if they were grotesque oversized kids. |
You are a riot. |

milk. DH and I now drink milk with dinner, too. As she was filling up on milk and not eating enough food, she gets a half glass (double old fashioned, so 6-8 oz?), then can have water if she is still thirsty.
In restaurants she is now (age 7) allowed to order pop (caffeine free, full sugar only). She gets V8 fusion with breakfast. Usually milk with lunch. It is rare for us adults to drink pop at home. Fizzy water is more common. |
I love the way Americans are such oversized fat asses due to their poor dietary habits and excessive ignorance. |
An adult can, if they don't care about their health. And many Americans don't, so drink away.

OP here - Wow, I never knew me drinking Diet Coke at dinner would create such an uproar. In any case, I am trying to limit my intake too, so you are all very motivating.
And, no, I have never made the tater tot casserole like the Duggars, but have often thought about it. Just kidding! I do try to cook (often from the Scramble cookbooks) like the rest of you.

Pop? Fizzy water? The hell? |
