I've never been east of RCP

And I've never been there. And I probably never will. It's like another city over there.

OP, is there a reason why you feel this is worthy of anything? I mean, other than perhaps a Facebook status? I grew up in Bethesda, and I'm there perhaps once a year now. Georgetown I have been in perhaps twice in the last ten years. I don't see that this is extraordinary in any way that you don't venture into parts of the city. I had to look up the neighborhood Kent the other day because despite the fact that I'm a native Washingtonian, I had never heard of it and didn't know where it was.

New poster here. How can you consider yourself a native washintonian if you grew up outside of the District and had never even heard of Kent.

Many natives that have a hhi under $400k have never heard of the tiny, self-important neighborhood.

I bet many native Washingtonians with hhi over $400K have never heard of Michigan Park or the tiny, self-conscious "Atlas District," both of which are discussed on here too much IMO. And shut up about tiny, tiny LeDroit Park while you're at it. My native Washingtonian DH had never heard of LeDroit Park until his admin. assistant bought a condo there.

Why do we have to listen to all of you in those small pockets of DC as you wring your hands incessantly about finding an acceptable charter or OOB school? Enough.

Oh my god you're obnoxious. LeDroit Park is a neighborhood of historical importance to the District of Columbia and any "native Washingtonian" who doesn't know about it should consider themselves pathetically uninformed. And a native Washingtonian would be happy that the H Street corridor is booming now.

Your DH is more like a "native Bethesdan."

Hi OP: I live in Brookland (don't know which thread is the Brookland thread) and your thread doesn't really offend me-- if it makes sense, 95% of my time in DC is spent east of 16th ST, and I don't even remember the last time I needed or wanted to go to upper NW. The only thing that draws me over is the Wilson Pool, some of the nice parks around Georgetown, and taking a family member/visitor to MSt if they want to go. I tend to visit Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights, Adams Morgan, Dupont, and all those other neighborhoods and really NEVER go to Upper NW. Why would I need to? Isn't it like just houses and American University up there? I don't have a prohibition though against visiting, so could you tell me why I actually should and what I am missing?

OK, I get that most people spend most of their time in their own neighborhoods. I do, too. Why would I go to a Safeway across town when I have one three blocks away, for example.

But really, OP. You never want to go to a different part of the city even to try a new restaurant or something? I mean, my days of partying in Adams Morgan to the wee hours are long over, but I still venture over there every now and again to get a falafel. Live a little, for chrissakes. As a PP said, if you are going to pay big bucks to live in the city, why not actually get the benefit of it?

Kent borders Palisades and Spring Valley. It is close to Sibley Hospital. Basically it is bordered by MacArthur Blvd, Arizonia Ave, and Loughboro Road/Chain Bridge Rd in NW. It is not a "new name" it has often just been lumped in with the rest of Palisades as has Berkley (just east of Kent and also above MacArthur Blvd). The neighborhood name is real and has always been part of the ANC (advisory Neighborhood Commission). Palisades is technically just the section between the river bluffs/Canal Road and MacArthur. Not that this matters. Palisades, Kent and Berkley are used pretty interchangeably by most who live here or just all under the most well-known "Palisades."

I think it's fine if OP doesn't feel the need to go east of the park. I do think OP is missing out on a different experience of the city that would broaden her but she will be just fine if she doesn't take advantage of it.

Personally, I found that moving east of the park opened up the whole city for me. It's like a whole new place and I go everywhere now whereas before I felt afraid to go east of the park, let alone east of the river.

But it's not necessary that everyone feel the way I do.

Oh, I should add, that yes, I live in "Kent" but I have been all over Washington, including east of the Anacostia.

Maybe OP is directionally impaired.

I call it that swath up there that's apparently only accessible by SUV or minivan.

Neither the "Kent" nor "Berkley" (is that really how they spell it?) names have filtered through to urban DC, though I have heard tell of Palisades. Those stories are usually spread by wizened mothers whose whole families appear together in Crocs, and whose gray-headed menfolk wear plaid walking shorts.

If you are from Bethesda, you are a native Marylander.

How sad for you and your children. My kid had the BEST time today at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Though she might prefer the National Arboretum... better for splashing.
