Do charter schools really need early dismissal Wednesdays?

Wait, did she really say that???

No, I don't think she did, but I think I know how this misinformation came to be:
1) In some survey (I think the WTU survey), Lewis George said she supported "more differentiated professional development" ...if you read it, you can tell it means "professional development that is differentiated better" not "more professional development"
2) Matt Yglesias then tweeted a screenshot of it and said something along the lines of: Lewis George is calling for less classroom time
3) People then accepted his totally incorrect reading of it and retweeted it saying oh no she wants less class time

The bottom lines are: Lewis George didn't advocate for less classroom time - Matt Yglesias made that up, and if you're annoyed about half-day Wednesdays, that is not actually a mayoral issue because the mayor is over DCPS but doesn't set policies like that for charters and only charters do half-day Wednesdays.

This is Janeese talking out of both sides of her mouth, per usual. She came out in favor of PD days, then, when the inevitable blowback came, pretended that didn't necessarily mean less classtime and came up with this meaningless "professional development that is differentiated better" phrasing.

Huh? No, that is my phrasing — I am just saying if you read the original survey answer, that is clearly what it means.

The basic trade JLG has made with the teachers union throughout her career is that she gives them carte blanche over her education policies in exchange for them giving her its get-out-the-vote operation at election time.

This is all factually wrong, including the notion that the mayor doesn't have power over half-day Wednesdays. Charters must have these plans approved by OSSE. OSSE determines whether schools are obeying the law regarding 180 days of instruction.

It's the same with DCPS. Early release days are counted as full instructional days.

Except DCPS does not do early release days.

Sure they do. Every year early release and/or late start for weather. All those days count as full days in the final count.

And if OSSE doesn't count early release or late starts, we'll all be going to school through July to make up for weather days.

I am a teacher, I was in every meeting we had with her. This is not true, stop lying because as a whole we didn’t support McDuffie, who refused to meet with us or really anyone for that matter.

If you have been paying attention teachers would like less PD days or more meaningful ones. Also you want the experts who teach children to have NO say in policies? That’s a very odd stance.

What a reach. Charters have a weekly early release, DCPS has a handful.

You all are really the worst. I am a teacher, she has made no such promises nor have we asked for such a thing.

McDuffie if elected will be just as bad and likely worse than Bowser. As a teacher, I’d appreciate outsiders not commenting about things they actually have no clue about. Teachers do not want more PD, we would not even ask for that.

Stop spreading misinformation just because you see it works for Trump, it’s disgusting.

What did we have, 5 delays and 1 early release this year in DCPS? Versus once a week at charters, so that’s about 36, plus charters had delays for snow and weather as well. So we’re talking 6 days (which is more than usual for DCPS because of the big storm in January) versus 40 days at this charter? GMAFB

Explain to me how points 1 through 3 are factually wrong.

Either OSSE should count them or not? Also, many of the schools get out like 1.5 hour early

Thank you for saying this. McDuffie and his team have barely engaged on education issues.

There are other options for mayor. Stop complaining and vote for someone different than JLG or McDuffie.

Ya’ll will do anything to attack black women. Just because you are used to mediocre YT women in leadership roles, doesn’t mean you should be harboring negativity about a successful black woman like JLG.
