UMD has no waitlist, but if their yield is low will they take denied students?

Be happy your DC will go elsewhere.

It pales in comparison to UVA.

And why does every thread need to turn into a comparison of UVA? Do you realize not every kid is trying to go to the University of Very Arsholes?

I don’t get why UMD is disrespected and hated here..

Hey op - if going to Montgomery college is something your dc wants to do, they can do a year or two at MC and be guaranteed to transfer provided they apply to the program (mtap) and have a 3.0 college cumulative gpa. There are folks to help with this!

https://admissions.umd.edu/apply/maryland-transfer-advantage-program

But also good for your dc for getting in elsewhere and having options! Good luck!

Let us know exactly your issues with PG County.

PGC resident and UVA grad

As an alum and a MD resident it really bothers me that the out of state acceptance rate is higher than the in state.
Excuse me while I reevaluate my life choices.

This is true of most public universities as the yield rate is so much lower.

North Carolina schools are required to take a larger percentage from in state. I think it was something like 80%.

My NOVA kid is a junior at UMD and loves it. Been able to get internships each summer. Great friends and grades. Go Terps!

So which one? Other than CS, is CMNS selective?

The Common Data Set report also had this info about UMD's wait list:

Number of qualified applicants offered a place on waiting list:247

Number accepting a place on the waiting list:0

Number of wait-listed students admitted:0

If I am reading that right, that's a tiny wait list for a college the size of UMD.

Sorry, OP. Best to move on to the places where your DC was accepted.

Folks can download the Common Data Set data for UMD here: https://www.irpa.umd.edu/InstitutionalData/cds.html

Not a single student accepted a spot on the UMD waitlist? Huh. That’s unusual!

As you can see above, its extremely uncommon for UMD to put kids on the waitlist

UMD admission is major blind. There are often complaints about kids will high GPAs that are not admitted.

I am trying to move on...my child is happy where they were accepted, it's just been difficult for me as I had my hopes on UMD.
Empathy goes a long way.

Sorry to hear. Would have helped if you mentioned that in your original post.

Unfortunately on this forum there is a constant them of trying to put down UMD. I could see how many thought this with the way the original questions was worded. UMD hate is strange because admissions is more and more difficult as you unfortunately found out. I'd encourage your child to look into transferring after a year.

It's got nothing to do with hating UMD. It's that OP didn't express herself correctly, and frankly, is not being reasonable.

Thank you, I still have the question; what do they do if there are not enough students taking theses spots as UMD doesn't have a waitlist. Do they look into denied applicants who had good applications but there was no space for them?

This has not been a concern at UMD for years:

Applications:
Fall 2023:59,499
Fall 2024: 60,147
Fall 2025: 67,178

Number Admitted:
Fall 2023: 26,750
Fall 2024: 26,994
Fall 2025: 30,282

Number Enrolled:
Fall 2023: 6,170
Fall 2024: 5,812
Fall 2025: 6,544

UMD predicts yield—the percentage of admitted students who enroll—by analyzing historical enrollment data, tracking "demonstrated interest" (campus visits, email engagement, early applications), and using predictive modeling to estimate student commitment.

They do a pretty good analysis of the number of students they believe will enroll, even with summer melt (students who hear from their waitlisted options) UMD hasn't in the recent past ever gone back to denied applicants. You can request a re-read of a denied admission decision through a formal appeal process, but they rarely change the initial outcome. Appeals require new and significant academic information.
