Mine doesn't

Are you full pay for HM or something? It's a top 10 engineering school IMO, maybe even top 5 if you value professorial contact.

What “perception”? Why are you so insecure that you are worried about what people might think? Nobody cares!

Exactly

Friend’s kid is headed to UMD bc of costs. Great choice.

I graduated from a Fairfax school and went to UMD. I got into some great Virginia schools, but I liked UMD more and they gave me a great scholarship.

Go Terps!

I don’t think most students at UMD are going to bat an eye or care that your kid is from VA. Everyone is starting fresh and there for a reason.

Harvey Mudd has fewer than 30 students who scored above 1560 on the SAT in its entire freshman class. Let that sink in.

? most kids don't go home for the weekend.

We live 40min away, and we hardly see DC. Same for their friends.

OP, if it makes you feel any better, my super high stats kid was actually rejected at the T10s and ended up at UMD. Dual STEM major. But, they are super happy there. They are having the time of their life, and they have some really amazing internships in their field.

As you know UMD is a R1 school, and it's great for research in many areas.

Harvey Mudd is an excellent school. A friend of mine went there. But, it's pricey and tiny (I visited my friend a few times). It's very different from UMD, though the weather in CA is much better than the weather around here.

As a PP stated, the reputation of UMD has gone up in the past many years, and there are a lot of high stats kids who get rejected.

Do NOVA or MOCO kids go home for weekends?

Really depends on the kid. We are MOCO. Neighbors' kids are home 2-3 times a month. Spring break not included, my kid hasn't been home this semester, and we likely won't see them until after exams. Last semester, kid came home once (not including breaks) due to being very sick. Kids' friends whose homes aren't far also don't leave on weekends. It's also fun for their HS friends to come visit during their college spring and fall breaks.

My kid is having a fantastic experience at UMD!

Mine doesn’t unless there’s a family event and then just for a few hours.

NOVA kid rarely comes home. Would much rather spend time at school w/friends, activities and studying. Mom and dad are BORING.
