| For my kid's STEM major, UMD makes more sense, particularly given the scholarships and research opportunities. Kid also has other options, including UVA and Harvey Mudd. Kid worries about people's perception if choosing UMD. |
| I don't think there's any perception issues at all that I've noticed. So many kids from all over the DMV attend, to be honest. |
| With such great VA state schools, it would appear that dc went to UMD for a good reason. I wouldn’t worry about it |
Agreed. Especially if you want to major in STEM and stay in the DMV for college, it’s the obvious choice. |
| For whatever reason everyone in DC area loves to hate on UMD. Just ignore it. Results speak for themselves. |
| I don’t know anyone who hates on UMD. Everyone I know thinks very highly of it. Kids from all over the country are dying to get in. |
| Thanks for the responses. OP here. My kid is worried that people may think that she must not have been accepted to better in-state options, or other privates/OOS options. But truly UMD fits her the best in all considerations. |

Advice for anyone who feels others may underestimate them: Let them.
Then they will never see you coming. This approach has served me well in life. |
| They may think that. Get over it if it’s a good fit. Your kid is worried or you’re worried? I bet your kids friends don’t give a sh*t. |
My FCPS kid chose UMD over WM for CS. Loves it there. |
Why is this a worry? Go to college where you want. Why are you worried so much about other people? |
+2 Why does your kid care what others think so much? Time to grow up. Great life lesson here. Your friends shouldn’t be judging you, they should be cheering you on. Most kids really don’t give a second thought to where someone else chooses to go to college. They just get excited for them. |
UMD is a B10 school that is less than a half hour away from DC. There's no school in VA that is comparable. |
| What it B10? |
Big 10; our son is there, and he's been attending a lot of different sports events |
