They've been infested with APEs who don't even have kids in APS and are trying to push their anti-public school agenda.

While I seriously doubt this- you do illustrate the problem with the current system. Its super easy with anyone for an ax to grind to seize control of one of these committees, and suck up staff resources.

At least one of the APE guys on the math committee doesn’t have kids in APS and writes MAGA propaganda about schools on a RW blog.

Why is he on an APS committee when his kids are not in APS?

His kids are probably in pre-k. Many parents like to get involved before their kids begin at APS.

No - his kids are older. His daughter is the same year as mine.

did he finally move them to APS? because he represents in Bacon's and the news articles that he's the parent of APS students. is that true?

Possibly

When he was pushing RW propaganda in his earlier Bacon posts he just said "parent of two school-age children in Arlington County, Virginia". They were in private school at the time.

very sneaky

I see recommendations to adopt a better curriculum and actually use it, allow homework in elementary schools, allocate math specialists based on students who need them, provide more detail about pass scores, etc. These seem pretty reasonable, honestly.

ugh, the math committee should focus on things that actually help our students learn math!

Not sure if it was part of the math committee but he is literally featured in the Youngkin admin's press release about raising cut scores -https://www.doe.virginia.gov/Home/Components/News/News/496/227

Low cut scores can make it look like students are learning when they really don’t have full mastery

The scores were artificially lowered due to pandemic losses. This year’s raise is bringing them back where they were. It’s not politically driven, what purpose would that have?

Arbitrarily increasing the cut scores off-cycle with no additional supports for kids isn't going to increase mastery.

If it weren't simply a political move, they'd plan for it and roll it out with additional support.

FALSE

The cut scores were changed *before the pandemic* because there were new tests rolled out.

Background:
VA DOE is required by law to update the standards of learning every 7 years. New standards means new SOL tests. New SOL tests means new scales for passing.

Math:
The 2009 standards were used for SOL tests from 2012 to 2018.
The 2017 standards were used for SOL tests from 2019 to current.

Pass cut scores for math were rescaled in 2019 because it was a new test.

Reading
The 2010 standards were used for SOL tests from 2013 to 2019.
The 2018 standards were used for SOL tests from 2021 to current.
(The new SOL wasn’t used in 2020 because no SOLs were given that year.)

Pass cut scores for reading were rescaled in 2020 because it was a new test.

I'm on the math committee and have no idea who you are talking about. Its a great committee full of thoughtful people.

Love how he claims to be a Dem when he was in bed with Youngkin Admin.

I'd never heard about Bacon's Rebellion until a PP mentioned it and you shared the link. He's talked about the APS school his kids go to, so I believe his kid are in an APS school.

It appears they are now. They were definitely in private school when he started pushing RW propaganda.
