Why did the Councilmembers say nothing when Eid was established as a makeup day on the calendar last year? They could have advocated that the day after President’s day be a makeup day or some other non-instructional day but they were silent then and complaining when MCPS is doing what they planned now. They should have advocated that MCPS have more than one snow day so it wouldn’t be a surprise which day is being used. Some school districts have four. For the councilmen to say that they prefer the Eid holiday remains and that they prefer to have a waiver from the state of Maryland so that MCPS shortchanges every kid instructional time shows that these Councilmen haven’t been paying attention to the school calendar and don’t prioritize education. |
It’s clearly performative by members running for county executive. Maybe they are also trying to save face after MCPS lost the lawsuit about the book opt out. Wasn’t that led by Muslim families? |
If the students still get 1080 hours (1170 for HS) besides the makeup days they will still be receiving many more hours possibly over 100 more than many other states weather that is in 176 days or 180 days. |
It's hard to put more than 2 snow days in the calendar based on the number of holidays and 4 post MP teacher only days. They did sacrifice 1 though from the transition day but besides that Maryland law is difficult in building in days unless you want even shorter summers. One thing that Maryland law DOES allow is virtual days after all built in days (minimum 3) are used. They couldn't go virtual on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday but Friday and Monday could have been. That said Prince George's is in the same boat since they had 3 days built in but closed on 7 days so MC isn't alone. |
As a Jew I'll admit it is so unfair that Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur occur so early in the school year that they are safe from makeup days. It sucks if your holiday is being used but don't sweat it just treat it as a day off, get an excused absence and make sure no new material is taught that day. Have Maryland flatten the law to hours only starting in 2026-27. This change can restore summer to full length and keep all holidays intact. |
That day was never labeled as a potential make up day, if it had been, they could have used it. That's my frustration with council members bringing this up now! It had been clearly labeled in the calendar that has been visible since last year. It was frustrating the MCPS didn't use the labeled in school make up days last year, and now when they do, they're met with pushback. The time for that pushback was last year when the calendar was being developed. They should start pushing back for next years calendar now so we're not facing the same issues. PLEASE switch the unnecessary transition day back to a regular day and that will give us at least one more built in snow day. |
| Feb 17, Mar 20, Hindu holidays, Jewish holidays should all be taken off the calendar. Winter break and spring break should be adjusted if people have issue with having a break around Christian days. Have breaks according to school year not various religious or cultural holidays. |
If large percentages of students and teachers ake a day off due to a religious holiday it doesn't make sense to have school that day. |
| I'm hearing from teacher friends that the board is voting today to have all of the make up days be four 1/2 days added to end of year. Juneteenth and primary election day on June 23 will be no school. So now the last day will be June 25 or 26. Does anyone know if there is an actual vote today or is it just up for discussion. I guess the pressure to have no school on March 20 possibly won out. |
If this is true, this is actually madness. |
There is a Discussion/Action item this evening: "Technical Amendments to the Adopted 2025–2026 School Year Calendars," but no details are posted yet. |
I wouldn’t call this a “technical amendment” unless they were just officially adding in 3/20 & 6/18 like they already announced. To do anything other than that is something much more than a technical amendment and should be communicated and posted ! |
I bet the technical amendment is that June 23rd was originally designated on the calendar as a possible makeup day, but now it can't be because of the primary election that day. |
| So Taylor recommends March 20th is back as a professional day. No school for students. Extending the year instead. |
