"The last day of school for students scheduled for June 17, 2026, now will be June 25,2026, which uses June 18, 2026, June 22, 2026, June 24, 2026, and June 25, 2026"

But.. Taylor hopes state legislators will pass an emergency bill which would eliminate the need to extend the year.

The resolution passed. Now everyone waits for the General Assembly so they can undo it.

Let's see if he gets his wish. He kind of crapped all over the State BOE and MSDE though. Not sure how happy they will be about that.

This is so terrible. I understand he has his hands tied. Between Eid and the amount of days needed.... It's a mess. Hopefully the state will allow the hours. No one wants to be in school until late June.

Who are the decision makers on the General Assembly? Can we reach out to them?

I don't really care because my kid is not going to stay past the 18th, but what exactly is the legislature potentially doing? Going to say that no days need to be made up this year only? Or is it something more permanent?

You should have three delegates in your district as well a state senator. Reach out to all of them telling them you want them to vote in favor of the calendar meeting instructional hours OR days rather than AND.

I see from his memo that their application for a waiver was denied. They actually have to use the days they designate as contingency days - otherwise they are not actually contingency days.

The bill would change the requirement from meeting a specific number of instructional hours AND days to meeting a specific number of instructional hours OR days.

MCPS meets the number of instructional hours but not days, currently, which is why they're being forced to add instructional days to the calendar.

I'm all for the kids not missing instructional time, but we all know that zero instruction will be happening in late June on 1/2 days. They really should use the hours at this point and I hope the BOE revises next year calendar to include more snow days.

The real reason they are forced to add days to the instructional calendar is that they don't realistically plan for the number of snow days we should have.

I'll be writing to my state reps and asking them to oppose this. Schools need more time in school, not less. MSDE should require MCPS to incorporate more snow days into the calendar -- with a calendar of at least 184 days.

When is the vote? Don’t make fun of me but I’ve been literally holding off booking flights for that week and want to know the implications. But also don’t want to miss out on pricing.

Yes but the solution Taylor is pushing for is not just for this year -- it's for a change in the law so they never have to make up days. That's a real problem for a district that has so many students who are not meeting grade level standards. It's pretty horrifying to me that this is the solution he is pushing for, rather than having a calendar with a reasonable number of weather days.

I've worked for MCPS for 25 years. We never had off for Diwali, Eid, Lunar New year etc. I agree that everyone should be able to celebrate their religious holiday. But in doing so, we are using up more days in the calendar. It's not so easy to just add 4 or 5 more days as makeup days. School would be in session until late June every year. Unless they remove days from Winter and Spring Break.
