Don’t even think of goi g there with “well they got paid for the snowcrete days.”

Juneteenth is going to have to be a paid holiday.

This is gonna be expensive.

I don't think they need to pay them any more than previously negotiated. The contract is for a specific number of working days. They did not actually work the snow days.

But we got paid for them. So teachers will not get paid for the make up days.
So if you are a teacher who has summer job starting June 21, which are you going to do…work for free or earn a paycheck? Not a tough decision there.

Right. So you got paid for days you didn’t work. Then you can make up days where you won’t get paid.

That isn't how it works. You'll get over it.

Except it is how works

No, it isn't. Staff will get paid if they have to work those days. This notion that "they owe us days because they got paid before" isn't anything other than footstomping by some Mad Mommy of MoCo.

Seems wrong to me. MCPS contract has specifies a certain number of "duty days" that teachers are paid for. I think this is something like 195 days. The days you had off for snow were not duty days. Now you get added duty days back. You don't get paid more.

Yeah, they will.

And shame on ANYONE who suggests they shouldn't. Especially the Mad Mommies of MoCo. Those bishes are ruining everything.

I would much rather MCPS start in August. This schedule chaos is ridiculous. So they decided that March 20 isn't a school day anymore? I'm so confused. Why don't they keep an actual schedule with snow days and a pre-defined plan for makeup days. I grew up in a snowy area, and it was never like this. We had 4 snow days. If less, you got out of school early. If more, they added a day or two in June. Everyone knew what was expected. There were no "makeup days in the calendar that no one wants to use" like with MCPS.

Yes, no school for students on March 20.

So why do they add in the makeup days at all if they're not going to use any of them?

Oh the horror! That's a tragedy compared to students not getting the educational days they're supposed to get. Also, this happened last year, where days in June were tacked on because MCPS didn't plan in enough snow days.

It's not like this is unexpected. I didn't make summer camp plans for my kids for that week because I knew this could happen. There's no reason to book camps by February, for a week that is likely to have makeup days.

Your kids sound young and you sound insufferable. Some programs/camps/jobs only exist with a fixed start date that did not previously conflict with the school calendar, and given that this is the latest the school has been extended in an extremely long time, it was reasonable to book these plans. Many of these programs are already full, and had people waited until the end of snow season, they would have been shut out. MCPS identified 3 perfectly reasonable dates (3/20, 4/15, 6/18) that most people would have assumed they would have used first because those are among the dates they literally picked as options when making the calendar, making it far less likely that they would have boldly chosen to use the later June dates instead.

That's your opinion, and your magical powers of detecting the age of anonymous internet poster's kids aren't that good.

And you sound far more insufferable whining about your HS kid's summer job, when most MCPS kids don't have the money to go to camp, and a lot of smart MCPS parents held off on making plans because we know it snows, and we have experience with what happens last year.

And MCPS never wants to use its makeup days, so this was entirely predictable.

It is quite a level of hubris to say you can predict the decisions of MCPS when they are the most inconsistent decision makers around and no two years have been the same.

Well they did the same thing last year. So it doesn’t take a great mind to predict that the school year would extend further into June. Sorry your HS kid is so put out by shifting schedules that impact a summer camp job. Other kids are happy to have a place to go to get an education and meals.

Please report back what your kid learns on that last week. How old are they?

I don't need to justify the importance of a school day to a helicopter parent who only cares that their privileged HS kid may not be able to have her part-time job at a summer camp go as smoothly as plan. I sent both my kids last year (ES/MS) and they both said they learned and enjoyed spending time with their teacher and friends.

Sorry you don't value education or think your child's school is capable of adding value in June.

I am the poster you have been replying to and you keep referencing this privileged daughter I have with some job at a camp. You have completely invented this from nowhere. I have no daughters, no kids with any jobs, so on and so forth. I’m glad your little kids enjoyed packing up their teachers’ classrooms last year. I love that for you.

My ES kid did STEM activities with her teacher that were super cool. My MS kid watched educational documentaries in some classes and did games and puzzles related to the subject in others. None of their teachers asked them to pack up their classrooms. If you're a teacher, and make your students do this, shame on you.

+1 Start 1 week earlier in August. Even the teacher's union will think it's preferable to this chaos of adding an extra week at the end of the year.

I may have missed it but I didn't see anyone mention the fact that the HB1084 bill to change school requirements from minimum number of days AND hours to the smaller of days OR hours - does NOT take effect until July 1 2026 as shown on Maryland government website linked below . I admit I could be wrong in understanding the bill itself. Otherwise, despite Taylor suggesting this bill passage will allow MCPS to remove the extra days in June for this current school year, but to me if the bill doesn't take effect until July 1 2026 then it doesn't apply to this school year.

The emergency session would make it go into effect THIS year (immediately).

That requires a supermajority vote. I can't imagine this would get that.

Let’s hope not. Why would they want to shortchange MCPS kids out of 4 days of education relative to the rest of the country. And give McPS an incentive to keep planning badly year after year.

Because it’s next week. Too soon. Changing next month’s schedule provides more notice.

Notice for what? No one planned to be out of school all last week, last week's lessons are starting to be used this week and will go into next week. Plenty of time.

It's a 4 day weekend. Families have vacations planned. Use your brain.

So give excused absences for those who have vacations planned. Problem solved

They’re going to keep it as it is. Problem solved.

The bill would change the requirement from meeting a specific number of instructional hours AND days to meeting a specific number of instructional hours OR days.

MCPS meets the number of instructional hours but not days, currently, which is why they're being forced to add instructional days to the calendar.

The real reason they are forced to add days to the instructional calendar is that they don't realistically plan for the number of snow days we should have.

I'll be writing to my state reps and asking them to oppose this. Schools need more time in school, not less. MSDE should require MCPS to incorporate more snow days into the calendar -- with a calendar of at least 184 days.

LOL. Oh, honey, and I want a pony, and we’re both going to be disappointed.

How lovely. Hope you enjoyed your extra week of snow days vacation while the rest of Maryland went to work.

Green is such an ugly color on you.
