If the swimmers’s time was so fast, hopefully they were still able to complete in regionals via a time cut.

My kid has state cuts (and has in the past), but every year kids that swim for let’s say West Springfield or Falls Church, they can make even states with very slow times compared to the kids in the regionals. It’s not really fair. Same for regionals. We have seen kids who wouldn’t even be 16th at our district become top 3 at regionals.

I’m confused about the PP’s point.

I think it goes to the fast kid who is not quite fast enough to make a regional cut. If they are on a high school team with a deep bench they do not have the opportunity to get there because of the deep bench. Meanwhile smaller schools in certain districts where they all pretty much do not have deep benches will end up with slower kids in regionals.

Patriot district has a lot of good teams. They have large high schools in more affluent areas and lots of club swimmers. The exception to that is probably Alexandria City - no idea why they are stuck there. The districts are lined up so the dual meets are competitive. This all makes sense. Swimmers do not do well if they are blowing the other teams out of the water or in the alternative being demoralized every week by being blown out for the water (see, used a water reference).

National district is okay but certainly not as strong as Patriot. Some years they are, some years they are not. They have less top swimmers overall. Not TJ should probably be in Patriot district, they seem to be a bit of outlier. But, I think they probably enjoy the superiority of being in the wrong district and destroying their competition. Their fragile egos would not handle being in Patriot and middle of the pack there.

To add to this. Some could also argue that most of the schools in the National district also get a bit screwed over. Sure their schools are large in numbers but demographics vary greatly from the other schools in their region and i many way they are more comparable with class 5 or 6 schools in terms of swim team size and depth.

Oh, that is a great point. Most of the teams in National are small teams. I think Lewis has 18 kids. A number of the other teams struggle to get 40 kids on the team. Lots of meets with empty lanes in them. I doubt that is the case in Patriot.

I know Liberty does not have that issue, their weakest school I think is Wakefield. Which does not have the same demographics as the other schools and they cannot fill lanes.

I was confused as to why West Springfield was cited as an example of kids making states with slow times.

Agreed. West Springfield is one of the stronger teams in the District. Their boys crushed and won their third consecutive title.

We swim in National and the socio-economic demographics play a huge role in which schools have a good, great or amazing swim team. It’s clear that some schools have first time swimmers who are still learning strokes. And it’s clear which teams have a pre-ponderance of club swimmers. Even access to practice lanes can be unequitable. Audrey Moore has 4 schools hosting swim practice there plus a club team that limits access to the practice lanes. Our swim team of 70 has 4 lanes on one of practice days (6 on other days) and no access to diving boards on another. I have no idea what will happen when Audrey Moore closes for renovation, that will put a lot of pressure on Providence, Oak Marr and Franconia.

We are Patriot District, and have the exact same practice at Audrey Moore. Practice is not unequitable.

This isn’t true. We swim National and my swimmer would have placed top 8 at States but didn’t make it because our Regionals is so strong. Sure, National is weak but VHSL Occoquan Region 6C is fast. The cuts for States are harder for our region than the rest of Virginia. Thats not fair.
