So? USAID was funded and Trump closed it down overnight. Same can be done for ICE by Congress. |
Exactly. There is precedent. Additionally, DHS is relatively new. |
That is an excellent point |
Big beautiful bill defunded USAID, so that ship has sailed. https://www.npr.org/2025/07/18/nx-s1-5469912/npr-congress-rescission-funding-trump |
And now we can defund ICE. Boom. |

Shutdown’s looking highly likely. |
| Bets on how long it’ll last? I’m assuming at least a week. |
Keep it shut down. It’s only DHS. Trump will find a way to fund Coast Guard and TSA, he’s already destroyed FEMA. I say shut it down. I am sorry for the people who work there. |
+1. The only thing I care about. I hope TSA still gets paid. This is 100% on Trump and his thugs. |
|
Can ICE continue to operate while shut down?
|
Yes, there will be funding for officers of ICE and CBP. Coast Guard active duty should be covered. FEMA CORE I believe are funded by the Disaster Relief Fund (assuming there's enough money allotted) and aren't impacted directly by shutdowns? Excepted without pay: TSA, anyone in “essential” roles not listed above. Furloughed: A lot of FEMA PFTs, meaning important grants related to disaster prevention will be slowed significantly, not sure about CBP support personnel (there are some good departments within customs that do work completely unrelated to immigration enforcement) Anyone else can feel free to correct this, I'm probably missing some people. |

Found this article that has an overview of how each agency is impacted: https://federalnewsnetwork.com/government-shutdown/2026/02/how-a-dhs-shutdown-affects-different-components-and-employees/?readmore=1
Basically, TSA is overall most negatively impacted. 90% of DHS is excepted, and officers, military, and FEMA COREs will likely have some level of funding. |
I know it’s easier said than done but TSA should strike. And Pilots should refuse to fly unless TSA is funded. Trump can pay them with all his winning from the tariffs! |
That would be great, but aren't most pilots commercial? So they might feel less solidaritythank Air Traffic Controllers? Anyway, DHS has the funds and can surely move them around to pay them. Although that would take pressure off Dems… maybe there are ways the states can try to support them the way they supported SNAP recipients if DHS doesn't. Realistically, FEMA won't be a huge factor for a bit since many employees are CORE and have some Stafford Act funding. The article did note a major disaster declaration would still be a problem though. “Danger season” doesn't start until May, but we're not out of the clear for random ice storms or tornado season starting in March. |
Shut it down. DGAF about it. |
