Seems like the hopes of a quick resolution for government funding (with the exception of DHS) is hitting a snag in the House. House minority leader Jeffries and some hardline GOP are saying they won't vote for the bill-splitting proposal.
Very frustrating - we could have full fiscal year funding for almost the entire government and then laser focus on DHS, but somehow folks are still allergic to compromise. I emailed my Rep this morning. I believe the Republican House call already happened and Dems are supposed to have theirs at 5 pm. https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/31/politics/government-funding-bill-shutdown-fears |
Graham won’t pass until we guarantee that he can grift. |
| Great. I’m good with DHS not getting a dime of funding for the next 3 years. America survived decades with no DHS. We will be fine. |
This is the vote to split out funding for DHS. There are five other agencies that won't be funded if they don't approve this. I don't care about DHS either but there's a bigger picture here. |
Yes, I know. I work at one of those other agencies! |
| Trump called Schumer and that shows Trump is scared and doesn't want another govt. shutdown. |
Yes. The bigger picture is that Trump has been a failure as the head of the executive branch. Giving him more money to steal is not going to improve his performance. |
Me too |
| We’ll be back to work on Tuesday. |
Yeah, and how long do you think that lasts until they start doing the math + Trump doesn't like the press making him look weak? I'll tell you - not long. And then were in another several week shutdown with everyone dug in, Democrats get zip at the end. |
| This is not how it works they already had a chance to vote against this when the bill passed before. It shouldn't be allowed to change already passed bills to fund the govt. I bet if Democrats ever get power Republicans will do the same thing it's going to be a problem |
I hope so. I trust the Dems can't be this dumb, but there was another thread last week asking Congressional staffers what they were hearing in Congress. The only person that answered was from a Senate office and they said all they were talking about were some leaked Ted Cruz remarks about the GOP and Trump. Zip about funding, ICE, etc. Doesn't give me a lot of hope. |
?? This is exactly how it works, though. The House passed a bill, the Senate changed the bill and then passed it, now the House has to vote again since the Senate changed it. |
| I think the vote is Tuesday and we’re back Wednesday but who knows |
That's the problem 2 weeks from now with a 2 week CR for DHS. I agree that if this plan does pass quickly the DHS bit may fall apart. |
