Regarding sleeping late, I would leave the kid alone. Even if they are having a good time at school, it is exhausting living in a dorm, being on your own, having to take all of your meals out at the cafeteria, doing homework. My kid works hard during the term and then comes home and crashes and luxuriates just so grateful to be home and sleep, relax, hang out with old friends and eat home cooking. I am happy for home to be that restful place for him.

Yep. Our college junior secured their paid Summer job last week during their Winter break.

Is this an internship or a regular summer job?

Is the kid doing well in school? If so, leave him alone. This is a control issue on your part.

A paid internship in their area of study at a college.

My sophomore DD had this break: slept until 1 or 2 or 3 pm, put in a lot of work applying to summer research programs. Drove DH nuts. Did not worry me, at least not the sleep part. The level of competition around the summer programs is terrifying.

Mine did the same. She is exhausted, joined a sorority, good grades but it’s a lot. Let her be. Mine did have a summer job.

They don't have a job. In fact, they should be finding a summer job. (didn't have one last summer, so this is a priority.)

They have been home since mid-December. Since the holidays are over, this is now officially making me frustrated.

Am I wrong? Are all of your college kids home this winter doing the same? Are we normal?

My Sophomore is waking up 1pm and calls me to ask me if what there is to eat. eye roll.

I didn't mind the first two weeks but seriously? It would also drive me crazy if I worked from home...

He was so much better before college... waking up earlier, cleaning his room, not leaving a mess around, doing laundry, etc. I don't know this kid now....

He's leaving Sunday (will do laundry and pack sometime tomorrow) and will cheer and miss him dearly ALL at the same time. LOL!

Tell him NOW that you expect him to get a job or internship this summer (good for career, and at at a minimum to make some money).

I was lucky, my kid never did this.

He sleeps in until 4 pm. Gets up and ask his dad to feed him , and since he has a daddy seahorse in the form of human father, he gets a hot meal in his bed ( ). No, he won't bother me because it pisses me off and he knows it.

Then, God knows what he does but suddenly springs up from bed and at 8 pm when he is showered and smelling good - goes to hang out with his friends and comes home at 4 am.

OR if he is at home...he is video-gaming and cussing worse than a sailor.

And all his friends are the same - not lumpen elements per se but only coming out and furtively active at night like cockroaches. They hang in each others basements, watch movies, play poker, play video games, plan trips, eat out. Uffff ...gen Z...I love him and also want to shake him.

Christ this is so grumpy though. Were you always 100 years old? Young people are nocturnal. He seems like a great kid with friends who has done well. Why would you want to shake him?

Uh, no.

How does this possibly prepare him for responsible , independent adulthood ?

And the fact that you are working to pay his tuition while he takes it easy.

I think the sleeping late is normal, procrastinating on the job search is also normal but needs to be addressed.

+ 1 Yup; that’s my son.

Maybe he doesn't want to get a summer job? He works and parties all year long. Maybe he just wants to sleep in every day until 2-3 from late May to August?

As a mom, I’d lose my mind.

Plus 2.

OP has two separate issues: the sleep schedule, and the job hunt. He can look for a job after 2pm. And please don’t think that his future is bleak if he doesn’t have an internship this summer. A “regular” job is just fine at that age.

I wouldn’t tolerate it in my household. My other college kid would be in their room at 8 demanding they get up. They have chores, and things they want to do. We get up at the same time and go to bed at same time. Sleeping late like this is a really bad habit for health.

My college senior is at home and goes back next weekend. He emerges from his room between 1 and 2 PM. It doesn’t bother me. He is a good student and a pleasure to be around. I’m letting him enjoy his break. It’s been this way since freshman year. When he is at school, he wakes in time for morning classes. When he works during summers, he gets up and is ready for work early.

While your son should look for an internship for the summer, understand that he may be looking even if you don’t see the results. It’s a tough market for internships and jobs.
