College sophomore home and sleeping in until 2-3 pm

Anonymous
My college kid is home for winter break. Like last year, they are sleeping in, daily, until often after 2 pm. One day last week, was after 3 pm. I WFH and this is driving me nuts.

They don't have a job. In fact, they should be finding a summer job. (didn't have one last summer, so this is a priority.)

They have been home since mid-December. Since the holidays are over, this is now officially making me frustrated.

Am I wrong? Are all of your college kids home this winter doing the same? Are we normal?

(OP here - they go back at the end of Jan)

My kid did that as well (he's a junior). He went back to school last weekend, so is back on his regular schedule. It didn't bother me because I remember doing the same when I was in school. It'll end soon enough when he enters the real world.

Finding a job?

There are not "jobs"

Wth is wrong with you.

Yes college students sleep that late.

Why would it drive you nuts if they are not making noise or taking to you during your work day?

I'd be happy they were quiet, frankly. My DC is on the same schedule, applies for internships and jobs at night.

In case it puts you at ease, I did this. Actually slept a but later, until -4 or 5. Sometimes I would.catch the sun going down, sometimes not. I am a night owl and loved this time. I'm glad my parents didn't give me a hard time about it. I won't have that chance again until I'm retired.

Why does it drive you nuts? That doesn't make any sense. You said you WFH -- I would think not being disturbed for most of the work day would be a good thing.

Yes, it's very normal for college students to sleep a LOT when they're home for winter break.

He's home, let him chill. College dorms and shared apartments are noisy and there is just so much to do if you are active in academics, activities or social scene, they rarely get good sleep there.

My guess is that it's not actually the sleeping late that is the issue, it's the fact that he seems to be taking it easy when he should be looking for a job.
And the fact that you are working to pay his tuition while he takes it easy.

I think the sleeping late is normal, procrastinating on the job search is also normal but needs to be addressed.

I agree.

Maybe he doesn't want to get a summer job? He works and parties all year long. Maybe he just wants to sleep in every day until 2-3 from late May to August?

What does this mean?

There are in fact jobs and college students have them.

You need to make clear that he needs to earn money this coming summer if he wants any spending money.

+1. I would not permit this, OP.
