Punishment for report card C?

Anonymous
Maybe you can sit down with him every night and go over his math with him. Have you tried that?

Why the rush to punishment and not try to help first?

Should we take away a privilege? put him in math tutoring? Was previously in mathnasium but hated it. Likes robotics and programming.

How do you handle disappointing grades when student is capable of better?

It’s odd third graders would get grades but punishing him at 8 or 9 for a C is probably the worst thing you could do.

There’s so much going on here: rushing, not trying, making careless mistakes, having difficulty studying, and a history of not enjoying mathnasium or accelerated math.

First you need to ask questions of the teacher and your son to understand if he understands what he is being taught. Gifted math in 3rd grade is probably going quicker and that pace may be part of the problem. Some kids need more repetition to encode information. If it’s not that it could be:
1. Developmental factors (age relative to peers, young for grade): extremely common with young for grade children, they can correct orally and get better over the year
2. Task fatigue or timing: This is about regulation and it’s more common in younger for grade kids
3. Speed-accuracy trade off: this is how some people operate best, but they need to learn to go back and check work. Conceptual learners, younger kids, etc.
4. Attention issues (ADHD)

You probably need to scaffold studying for your child. You need to help him learn good study habits.

Seriously. OP sounds like she has no idea how to parent effectively.

Why are so many people shocked at 3rd graders receiving grades? In public school you get report cards in kindergarten. It's not that big of a deal.

If you want some insight into how your relationship with your son will unfold over the years as you punish him for being human, look at this subreddit.

This is racist. Why are you assuming their Asian? It seems like recently there’s been a lot of jealous white parents who’ve been putting Asian parenting down because an Asian kid “stole” or will “steal” their kids spot Harvard (even though they earned it).

She just gave you the reasons for not doing well in math that they give everyone. Third grade math is the last easy math grade, even a “gifted” program. It gets tougher

Any public school that is decent does not give letter grades. They will get grades soon enough. Public schools give progress reports with details about strengths and weaknesses which is much more helpful

Through elementary school report cards are progress reports. They provide information on the strengths and weaknesses of a child and ideally help parents and educators align the young child for success and make sure they are receiving adequate instruction and are at the right level. Letter grades are not normal.

Kids at this age are being taught how to learn and to appreciate learning. They don’t need to be ranked.

This. In 3rd grade, it’s a reflection on parents also. You need to support your kid.

I also assumed they are asian. The toxicity of asian tiger parenting is more obvious now. I dont feel jealousy i feel pity. Those poor kids and those clueless parents.

The word "punishment" is a dead giveaway. Any other person would say "help."

She said he was in a gifted class. Next year they will put him in an appropriate class. No big deal.

Wut.

But it's certainly no secret that Asians are WILDLY OVER REPRESENTED at Harvard and similar schools.

It's at the discretion of the school whether to use 1-4 or A-F but it means the same thing.
