Why are so many people shocked at 3rd graders receiving grades? In public school you get report cards in kindergarten. It's not that big of a deal.
Through elementary school report cards are progress reports. They provide information on the strengths and weaknesses of a child and ideally help parents and educators align the young child for success and make sure they are receiving adequate instruction and are at the right level. Letter grades are not normal. Kids at this age are being taught how to learn and to appreciate learning. They don’t need to be ranked.
