Why is Athleta not cheaper than Lululemon?

Athleta routinely has 30% off sales.

No. I am a yoga, instructor and wear all the brands 6 + times a week. My Athleta gear is what has lasted the longest.

Me too and Athleta has petite sizes!

I work out in a cotton t shirt and cotton sweat pants. I do not need anyone to see the exact contours of my body. I know what's under there.

And why is alo so expensive?

I just bought a new pair of leggings from alo and they are the worst. I own leggings from lululemon, Vuori, Varley, and Sweaty Betty and alo are hands down the worst of the bunch.

^ and Athleta, of course, Athleta are some of the best that I have. Not too thin, don’t get baggy, have held up over time.

Nope. No way do you own leggings from all of these brands and "Athleta are some of the best." Athleta clothing is polyester trash. Varley and Vuori are not trash at all (haven't worn Sweaty Betty so won't opine there).

I miss Lucy. I used to love those clothes (I still do but I can't buy more)

None of these brands are actually designed for working out. They are designed for looking cute. They have slightly different target audiences. Lululemon is trendier with more colors and and often more body conscious and revealing pieces. Athleta skews slightly older, kind of a "mom" brand, their target buyer is probably a bit more practical and the brand touts features like fleece lining for winter run tights or easy to wash travel clothes.

There is no reason to think Athleta would be cheaper or more downmarket. Yes they are owned by the Gap but so is Banana Republic, which actually has decent quality and regularly runs more expensive than JCrew. The quality between Athleta and Lululemon is very similar with similar fabrication. The difference is entirely in styling.

I have a couple things from both but mostly I'm shopping Nordstrom Rack or Amazon for brands like Zelle and CRZ Yoga which are less expensive. I work out every day, sometimes twice a day because I often do an evening yoga session after doing weights or cardio in the morning, and don't need to spend $200 on a single workout outfit. I pay attention to color and fit and style when I shop but I'm also often just looking for practical items that will hold up to regular washing and wearing and be comfortable (no patience for leggings that slip down or bras that dig in or whatever).

Do you actually work out in your work out clothes? I do and some are better than others for the purposes intended. YMMV.
