Any clever tips for finding less-expensive places to stay in NYC?

Do you think they'll object to random strangers like OP and her family showing up for a few nights?

It’s quiet, easy parking. I haven’t been in that area in a few years so I don’t know how much it’s changed but it’s worth checking out.

Jersey is the way to go if driving. You cut out a lot of potential city traffic. Hoboken has direct service to Midtown. Jersey City requires a transfer.

The least expensive place I've stayed at in NYC was a cousins house, OP should try that.

Do not in December. Go Sunday evening to Monday. Go in August. Go and stay in Queens or Jersey or by Wall Street. Those are my tips.

wait until the day before and book through a true "last minute" site. The one I used doesn't even tell you which hotel you are getting, but what kind it is (4 stars or whatever).

seriously booked a room for $150, but you need a risk tolerance.

My SIL and her family (husband and two kids) have lived in LIC for over a decade now. It’s a great place and very convenient to get to manhattan.

Not PP, but Hoteltonight does this.

We always use hotwire for NYC bookings. The only close thing I saw in NYC proper over NYE was $410 a night for Wall Street area. The good thing about hotwire is that it says you are guaranteed one of 4 hotels, so before I book I just check all of them and make sure they all work for me. The only other thing is look closely at the fees/concierge fee, which can be an extra $50 a night. And, all bookings are nonrefundable.

Jersey is the way to go if driving. You cut out a lot of potential city traffic. Hoboken has direct service to Midtown. Jersey City requires a transfer.

Only issue with Jersey is that if you want to take a break during the day- such as clean and freshen up before dinner, you’re limited. Also, was in NYC once and got caught in rain showers, so we had to go back to hotel for dry clothes. Harder to do that if you’re in Jersey.

Not if your hotel is next to a PATH station. Hoboken to Penn Station is 15 minutes. Exchange Place to WTC is 5 minutes. Ride times are very close to Long Island City plus the benefit of not having to drive through the city to get to your rental (and drive through it again to get back.)

There are two kinds of people in this world: the kind that stay in NYC and the kind that convince themselves it’s just as easy to visit NYC by staying in NJ.
