Any clever tips for finding less-expensive places to stay in NYC?

I live in NYC and unfortunately I think $350 is pretty good over NYE.

I do belong to a Facebook group for my neighborhood that effectively functions as a listserve. I pretty regularly see posts during the holidays from people who are looking to sublet their apartments on a short-term basis while they’re away and are somewhat flexible on price. You could look into that if you’re open to it, although obviously there are some risks/downsides and I think it is technically illegal under the new short-term rental ban. The group I’m in is called UES Connections, although I’m sure there are others if you’re not interested in the Upper East Side.

You’re booking way too late for a good rate over the holiday season. I’d suggest Jersey City, North Bergen or anywhere else that has easy transportation into Manhattan. Also you might want to check cites lite Hotels.com.

People are right though about making sure the room offers an in room bathroom if you find something with a great rate. I’ve don’t the bathroom down the hall and it worked out fine. But you probably want to know in advance if that’s what you’re doing.

For this New Year's, like in 2.5 weeks?

$350 is a good price any time of year for NYC but for New Year's in just a few weeks, it's amazing.

FWIW, DD and I stayed at the Pod Times Square in September and paid about that much.

normally last minute is the way I go in NYC for cheapest prices (on hotwire) but over NYE I'd snag a $350 and feel lucky.

We always stay at The Empire because it is across from Lincoln Center and I like to go to the opera. Rooms are quite small, but very affordable. They have some rooms in Jan for well under $200 a night.

Sorry, PP here, spaced out on the NYE thing. The Empire is running about 550 for NYE.

I have had luck with lower Manhattan. and jersey city - just book somewhere walking distance to the PATH. Also feel Jersey city is easier if you are planning to drive.

This OP. We went 2 years ago and paid $350 in the Times Square area for just an ordinary Doubletree hotel.

Pp. We went Dec 27th and 28th and paid that price. So for NYE $350 is a steal.

We stay in NJ and either drive in and park (but not at peak times) or the hotel has a shuttle to the train. Getting into the areas we want to go takes less time than getting across the city.

$350 a night is reasonable and low for NYC, especially on NYE.

As others said, you can stay in NJ or deep Brooklyn or Queens.

Weehawken right at the ferry or the financial district on the weekend used to be my suggestion. But not sure at NYE!

DP. Sheraton Lincoln Harbor sold out for NYE. Plus expensive to take cab back from Manhattan. We used ferry in AM and bus back from Penn Station (too downscale for holiday treat).
