If UVA completes its planned reforms prohibiting DEI at the university, the Department will close its investigations against UVA.

Trump's contract also requires no sex or gender DEI. Does UVA follow that already?

UVA was still following their own DEIA guidelines for hiring of faculty and staff. Unclear if this agreement extends to UVA hiring, or only admissions.

It’s quite clear. DOJ was investigating allegations of discrimination in both admissions and in hiring. Yesterday’s agreement states that DOJ will pause those investigations while UVA cleans up its act - which is what Ryan was supposed to do but he played games with DOJ, which wasn’t smart and pissed off UVA’s Board of Visitors as well. Note that the Board gladly received Ryan’s resignation with nary a whimper

Yes. If the United States determines that UVA is making insufficient progress toward compliance, UVA will have 15 days to address the issue. If the United States determines that UVA has not made adequate progress within that time, or if we disagree with DOJ about what the law requires and cannot resolve that disagreement, then the United States may terminate the agreement, resume the investigations that had been in abeyance, and pursue the remedies available to it.

So basically, the trump administration can still come back at any time and claim they aren't complying. Which they will do if UVA admits too many non-white people.

Stop with the race-baiting. DEI served its purpose & now it’s time to adopt the radical policy of not choosing based on race.

You are wrong. The committee was appointed tby the interim head, Paul Mahoney, to review the proposed compact. The committee which recommended that UVA not sign the contract, which is what Mahoney decided to do. That is separate from the agreement with DOJ re DEI discrimination.

Nevertheless, he is temporary and doesn’t need to “own” the decision for long. However being the lawyer that he is, I’m guessing he sought advice from the right people and actually threaded the needle about as well as anyone could.

NP. It’s not race-baiting, it’s a statement of fact. The measure of whether there is ‘merit’ in admissions is based on the percentage of URMs people with an agenda ‘think’ there ought to be. This part is obvious. If a class is 11% black (15% of high school students), that is perceived to be too many. “Something must be afoot, that many black students can’t possibly have ‘merit’ to be there”

Don’t see much administrative attack on the need to admit fewer men given the preference they get at most colleges without engineering. Don’t see attacks on geography - the rural student from Appalachia or the Dakotas. Don’t see attacks on country club sport recruiting

Virginia is not very Asian—something like 7%. Since 2/3 of UVA is in state, I doubt the class will be majority Asian. I guess if they admit a ton of OOS Asians…
