They agreed to abide by the Trump administration so-called anti-discrimination guidelines in terms of iuniversity programming, admissions, hiring, and other activities.

This is a BIG deal. I understand why they agreed - not agreeing would be catastrophic. But Trump is trying to reform higher education and UVA just signed on.

What did you think they should do? They have thousands of students and employees, a hospital, clinics, labs, etc. that rely on government funding. If they refused to negotiate, wouldn't they lose their funding and possibly pay a penalty on top of that? People have posted what Columbia and Brown had to do already. That would devastate a state school.

UVA's endowment is bigger than Brown's. [i]

But neither of them should have settled. Negotiations with this administration are worthless; trump will come back for more because they've already shown weakness. UVA even negotiated that into their settlement! Trump can claim they are violating the terms at any time and reopen the sham investigations.

False. endowment is 5.4- 6 billion. Brown’s is over 8 billion. ALSO, UVA has many more students: 35k to Brown’s 11k

You are wrong. Stop spreading false information.

Brown’s endowment is $7B: https://investment.brown.edu/endowment

UVa’s endowment is $14B (https://uvafinance.virginia.edu/sites/uvafinance/files/2025-02/2025.02_UVA_EndowmentTwoPager_mb_2%20%282%29.pdf)

No need to be nasty. I was using the 4.8B budget figure given here by wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Virginia. But what is your point? UVA has many more students.

You don't know this. And what would you propose? Should the DOJ continue its investigations into racial discrimination and antisemitism in hiring and admissions? You know it was doing it under Ryan, which is why he had to resign and why the Board took his registration with nary a complaint. Most of these universities were in violation of federal law and the Fair Admissions SCOTUS case. They simply removed the checkbox for race and moved race to the essays. Some schools even started combating SCOTUS by immediately asking all students to submit a video. Guess why? Now ED and DOJ are forcing the universities to comply. UVA asked for time to do this. It's a smart move, and, frankly, the only tenable one.

You are an alarmist. Settle down. All will be fine. UVA is as solid as it ever was.

Everything around it is not.

If you don’t know the difference between government funding and endowment, please do some reading.

UVA has bound itself to DEI/discrimination guidelines that were non-binding.

I know one of them too. You have more faith than I do.

DP. I’m in Charlottesville and know Mahoney well. UVA is in great hands.

100%! My DD is there and she is living her best life. Fulfilled academically, socially, emotionally....thriving. It's a fantastic place and opportunity! So grateful to have it available to us IN STATE for Virginians! Couldn't be more happy with how things are going.

People who want to gripe, don't even go there. How about talking to people who are there to see how things are going.

Not sure I get your logic. If you are happy with how things are going, if your daughter is thriving, you should be upset that the federal government is trying to change it. My kid is thriving there too and I'd like to keep it that way.

What does it even mean to “dismantle DEI”? Is it just a semantic thing? Most, if not all, of the staff who specifically worked on DEI initiatives are still there, they just have new titles.

Was your kid reliant on DEI programs for their ability to thrive? If not, they won't notice any difference.

It means for example a woman is more qualified than a white male he gets the job. Not a hard concept.

No, my kid was reliant on academics freedom and critical-thinking leaders. Why in the world would anyone want or trust the Trump administration to be the arbiter of "unlawful discrimination"??? The people who are arguing that the white wealthy South Africans are the only persecuted group worthy of US protection. Truly, this administration may well be the absolute last people on earth I'd trust to make any such determination.

I am hardly alone alone. https://www.cavalierdaily.com/article/2025/10/acquaviva-uva-paid-nothing-yet-lost-everything
