We think of slavery as odious and indefensible because it is. Slavery deprives a human being of free will and self determination. It treats people as property and deprives people of their humanity. Even slavers understand that slavery is dehumanizing because slavers almost never choose to enslave groups with whom they self identify -- throughout history, slavery has been practice imposed on racial and ethnic minorities deemed as less evolved and more animalistic than the ruling majority, in order to justify treating them in this way.

The fact that the Bible frequently condones slavery (or is like "well just treat your slaves nicely, please") is a good reason to be skeptical about strict, originalist interpretations of the Bible, especially the Old Testament. Which has all kinds of crazy practices, including human sacrifice, polygamy, and other things we now reject.

The whole point of the New Testament was to break the covenant of the Old Testament. This pastor is not only a fascist but also completely uneducated about his own faith. Meanwhile there are approximately zero Jewish scholars or theologians who would say the Torah somehow blesses 19th century chattel slavery.

He is a racist, white supremacist who is bastardizing the Bible in order to subjugate women and non-whites.

The Pete Hegseths and Jd Vances of the world are using their religion to try to suppress some very dark stuff they have going on inside. He’s tried to drink it away, he’s trying this now.

You can subjugate women and non-whites without bastardizing the Bible.

"It is very important that every Christian affirm what I just said," he continued. "Not only should they affirm it, every Christian in today's society should be able to defend what I just said. Every Christian should be able to defend it ... Christians in America have been led astray on this topic. They've been led to believe things that the Bible doesn't teach, and when we go beyond the Bible, there are dire consequences."

Most American Christians don't think this way, fortunately.

I’m seeing this. I think what’s going on in our country doesn’t sit well in people’s bone and many are beginning to realize they’ve been lied to and manipulated. I respect those who are smart enough to be embarrassed.

People who called themselves Christians owned slaves and engaged in the most vile acts of demeaning other humans.

People who called themselves Christians also were pivotal in ending slavery.

The truth is you can use the Bible and Christianity to justify any horrific thing you want to do- this is especially easy in Christianity which is not as rules-based as other faiths. Other Christians are required to continually call out this behavior.

True, but in this case, he is using the Bible as justification.

To be fair no politician is a good Christian or responsible for everything a pastor says just because he attends that church.

If we start interpreting everything Abrahamic holy books say, literally, none of us should be following these religions.

That being said, anyone trying to justify slavery, isn't a decent human, let alone qualified to interpret and teach any holy scripture to others.

This is why you do not take literally a text from ancient times that was put together by men who had various agendas and were very far removed, by hundreds of years in some cases, from the actual events they purported to describe.

Anyone who does that has an agenda of their own, namely, to keep controlling the masses, particularly women and children.

Slavery is definitely justified in the Bible.

Then why descendants of slaves follow biblical religion?

Good question.

A better question is “why does ANYONE follow biblical religion “.

So some kinds of slavery are…defensible?

Oh yeah, all kinds of things are defensible if you take the bible as god's word and the earth's truth. Kill your daughter, kill your wife, enslave your neighbor, require a widow to choose between marrying her brother in law or being stoned to death... The bible is just a terrific model for a kind and productive society.

They aren't smart or charismatic enough to come up with a new model, though.

“fulfill” is understood to mean that the old covenant is over and the new one is begun. Not sure what you think you are saying - do you follow all of Deuteronmy and keep kosher at your church?
