Are people okay with losing friends over politics

And comparing Republicans to Nazis goes back to Harry Truman.

Bullshit. Not comparable. Trump is a new beast. Ask the millions of Republicans who reject him.

I have paid all my taxes, I've obeyed the law, my immigration status is LEGAL, and yet there are people like me who have been detained for weeks or months, mistreated and deported. Some of them have been released after their ordeal, with nary an apology.

You also voted for the abrupt cancellation of USAID, the stoppage of which has already killed HIV-infected infants in South Africa. Millions more vulnerable people across the world are predicted to die until 2030 if aid is not reinstated. This was American soft power and diplomacy, OP - the world order was American because the USA was the great helper of the world. Helping people not die will get you loyalty and peace on your terms. You are ceding that power to China, a repressive state that punishes dissidents systematically, and who wishes to remake the world in its image. Are you OK with that? Your quality of life and those of your children and grandchildren will decrease dramatically once the US has been supplanted as the arbiter on the world stage.

Americans who were in NIH-funded clinical trials have also been severely impacted, and their trials halted while treatment was ongoing. Some of them will die. Trump is waging a war against the federal government, and part of the government is composed of researchers who discover cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

I am talking about deaths; severe injury; or severe change in life circumstances for non-violent foreigners with valid immigration status who are detained or deported.

The burden of shame and blame borne by Trump voters is ENORMOUS.

And yet I still talk to one old man who voted for Trump... the more I talk to him, the more I persuade him that his support was misplaced.

I hope you see the error of your ways. You have hurt so many innocent people in the world.

Sadly, OP won’t even read this.

I think Trump has ruined more families than anything else since the civil war. Friends and I have taken a poll and the vast majority of families with 3 or more kids has at least one sibling estranged over politics. It seems like more MAGA have pulled away, except in DH’s family his gay brother pulled away from his MAGA brother in the first term.

The rot started with Fox News. Trump just poured gasoline on the embers.

And now they own CNN, CBS, ABC, Facebook, WAPO, Los Angeles Times, Instagram l, Wall Street Journal, and soon Tik Tok. Their claims of liberal media is an outright lie.

Every accusation is a confession.

Trump has exposed lots of people for views I am glad I know about. I would rather know the truth about people then be "friends" with someone that is secretly voting to do harm to so many people I know and love.

This why we can't tell anyone who we voted for....

Her best friend has some Trump flags in her room, and now my daughter doesn’t want to be friends with her anymore because of it. I told her that it should be okay—that differences in political views shouldn’t end a friendship, especially since they’ve been close friends since kindergarten.

The girl is also losing many of her friends for the same reason. I even spoke with her mom. Most of the friend group is Latinas, so SHE NOT RACIST. but they keep telling she likes a "PDF" and a racist. m

How can I help my daughter understand that it’s okay to have different views, and how can I help the kids stop treating her friend this way?

Do you have a lot of friends that have different political views?

Who? Li’l ole me?
The time for MAGA to say: can’t we all just get along is long past. MAGA is unAmerican. Simple as that. MAGA supports treason.

The thing about friends from kindergarten is some of them grow into awful people. No one should keep friends out of habit, it's important to reassesses and cultivate meaningful friendships. Some people aren't worth knowing.

I have a brother that I used to talk to nearly every week. Since I found out that he spends his time listening to Glenn Beck, and he's a big Trump fan, I don't talk to him nearly as much. We just don't seem to have as much in common as we used to. When I do speak to him I have to try my best to stay away from anything political or we start to argue. Some of the opinions my brother now has surprise the hell out of me considering the way we both grew up.

OP, it's really strange to me how you think it's "no big deal" whom you vote for.

You seem to think of politics like spots teams - not real life, and a lot of performance.

And yes, there is some performance in politics. But the decisions made are affecting people's real lives - jobs lost, health affected, choices changed.

I think people who voted for Trump fall inso 2 camps: the unbelievably selfish/privileged, and the unintelligent/naive. I consider being unbelievably selfish to be a bad friendship quality, so no, I don't want to associate with people like that.

I have a little more understanding for the unintelligent/naive, but certainly not for anyone who thinks who you vote for is "no big deal." You really think that people's lives aren't affected by politics???

I am acquaintances with Trump voters, but not a friend.
Shame on you for not caring who is elected. It's probably this, and not the fact that you voted for him, that upsets your daughter. Apathy begat this dictatorship.

Trump can also bring people together. My brother and I have grown closer over our shared hatred of Trump.

With trump and the maga movement, it's not political. It is racial. Voting for trump makes you a racist. I don't care what race you are. If you are a maga, you are a racist.

To answer your title question, yes. In current state, yes.

An aside…a physician friend of mine said this is surely going to create super bugs. You should never stop trials and medication immediately. Who knows what this administration has unleashed?

I would not trust someone that is still supporting Trump at this point, so no, we
wouldn’t be “friends.” It just screams personality disorder.
