Are people okay with losing friends over politics

Do you have a lot of friends that have different political views? I did before 2016. Our discussions were quite hearty and we could agree to disagree, and sometimes come to agreements or at least understanding of the others’ positions. Not now. Ain’t no way would I consider anyone who votes republican a friend. I don’t want to be in the same room with such a person.

Friends and I have taken a poll and the vast majority of families with 3 or more kids has at least one sibling estranged over politics. If you voted for trump then you are racist. Otherwise , why would you vote for him? Your daughter doesn't need you to tell her anything.

You made a choice to be a stealth Trump supporter to avoid any blowback. Your DD’s friend chose to support him openly and accept any social consequences. She’s either very brave or likes being a sh!t stirrer. I think you should reach out to her and let her know that she’s not alone.

Encourage your dd to be kind and to treat others with dignity and respect. She can choose who she wants to be friends with. If she no longer feels compatible with this longtime friend, the relationship may have run its course. She should not be mean to the other girl, but she’s not obligated to remain friends forever.

There is no need to be kind to MAGAS. MAGAS are cancer and cut them out of your life so you don't become infected with their racism and lies.

Politics and “views” are very different now. It’s not just fiscal conservatism etc. If I learn that someone voted for Trump in this last election I know that they are: OK with the Jan 6 attempt at insurrection, OK with Project 2025, OK with racism and homophobia and misogyny, OK with our president being a sexual assaulter, etc. So no, I would no longer want to be friends with you.

I have very limited contact with my parents who voted for Trump and I definitely have dropped former friends who voted for him. How people vote is now a reflection of their moral fiber and I don’t associate with amoral individuals.

So you're OK if I, a research scientist who has worked on cancer, gets detained and is forced to sleep on the floor and not get my daily medication (which might kill me), just because I am waiting for a green card? I have paid all my taxes, I've obeyed the law, my immigration status is LEGAL, and yet there are people like me who have been detained for weeks or months, mistreated and deported. Some of them have been released after their ordeal, with nary an apology.

You also voted for the abrupt cancellation of USAID, the stoppage of which has already killed HIV-infected infants in South Africa. Millions more vulnerable people across the world are predicted to die until 2030 if aid is not reinstated.This was American soft power and diplomacy, OP - the world order was American because the USA was the great helper of the world. Helping people not die will get you loyalty and peace on your terms. You are ceding that power to China, a repressive state that punishes dissidents systematically, and who wishes to remake the world in its image. Are you OK with that? Your quality of life and those of your children and grandchildren will decrease dramatically once the US has been supplanted as the arbiter on the world stage.

Americans who were in NIH-funded clinical trials have also been severely impacted, and their trials halted while treatment was ongoing. Some of them will die. Trump is waging a war against the federal government, and part of the government is composed of researchers who discover cures for cancer, Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes, etc.

I am talking about deaths; severe injury; or severe change in life circumstances for non-violent foreigners with valid immigration status who are detained or deported.

The burden of shame and blame borne by Trump voters is ENORMOUS.

And yet I still talk to one old man who voted for Trump... the more I talk to him, the more I persuade him that his support was misplaced.
