Tell me about Poolesville..

Laytonsville families can afford private school after ES, because property values are better in that area of the county.

I grew up in Laytonsville when it was much more rural than it is now. Definitely worth checking out, along with Damascus which feeds to Damascus HS. It's always been problematic that Laytonsville goes to Gaithersburg MS and HS.

Poolesville is nice too just has a feeling of not being very convenient to get to and is located close to the County's incinerator.

Poolesville has a nice small town vibe to it where the families know one another and a lot of the kids grow up and go to school together. There are nice homes and the schools are great. Kentlands is about 15-20 minutes away.

I go there because of the Tractor Supply
https://www.localsfarmmarket.com/ is a good place to get a coffee or a meal
Lots of Trump supporters (for Montgomery County)

Poolesville high has a very good magnet program, but you need to be accepted into it. So for the kids not in it, it’s just ok.
Apart from that the area has some cancer clusters, just google it

The current magnet programs at Poolesville are not a selling point for moving there since they won’t exist in their present form after the 2026-2027 school year.

The Dickerson incinerator. It's a very unfortunate no for me to live near the Potomac River in that general area. If you want to go down a rabbit hole you can go back through the decades and everything that has gone on in this saga.

"The emissions from the incinerator include substances known to affect respiratory health, contribute to smog, and persist in ecosystems. Residents have long blamed the facility for elevated rates of cancer and chronic respiratory illness in the surrounding area."

Look at Darnestown, Damascus, Ashton/Sandy Spring too. Also North Potomac.

OP here. Thanks for your reply!

I do not like these suggestions. They are difficult than Poolesville/Laytonsville homes.

* different, not difficult.

you will have a hard time finding homes with 1ac+ plus privacy from the town PP mentioned; not like Poolesville or Laytonsville. I'd suggest Brookeville area (north of olney on 95).

Except decent schools in poolesville, there is nothing there attract me. In poolesville, many roads are narrow and one lane only, speed limit is lower, quiet neighborhood and far away from many big retail stores and restaurants.

I hear about that as well. I wonder if those teachers in magnet program at poolesville may have to be moved to go to other schools to teach?

OP here. Holy shhhh.. thank you to you and the other PP who brought this to my attention... I would have never known otherwise!!

Aside from this problem that the county is still trying to "figure out," I read that Poolesville also has a water problem in the sense that their wells are drying up and even in town water is an issue.

Welp, I'd say those two things together would have me crossing it off our list.. sigh..

Many thanks to those who have contributed their input!!

OP here. Thank you so much for bringing up your last point - I'm not sure if you also replied below with link, but I also am thankful to that poster, too.

Damn, breaks my heart about people getting sick from burning trash.. our current neighbors do that somewhat often and I can't stand it - we have young kids, including a baby, and the smell is bad, aside from the fact that who TF knows what we're breathing in.. I couldn't willingly go to an area where there is already cancer clusters.. 😣

Makes me think of "A Civil Action" ..

OP here. Thank you to you, as well, if you aren't one of the PP who pointed this fact out!

I couldn't ever knowingly move to a cancer cluster area.. many thanks to bringing this to my awareness!!

More like “poopsville” - literally half of everyone calls it that because it smells like feces due to what goes on there.
