Child came home distraught over teacher who was attacked.

French.

So can't OP get her child an IEP for anxiety that says she doesn't have to be in class with a violent student?

lol. That’s the first thing I wondered.

Lolololol it’s SO HILARIOUS.

Pound sand to you and the fail-mom who wants OP’s kid to adopt a serene attitude and pray for the problem to ‘learn better skills.’ It never happens. OP, start reporting. This is what happens when people pretend on a broad level that ICT and full integration works well, and that ‘behavioral concerns’ can be resolved at the expense of kids who don’t have these permanent deficiencies.

You need to keep saying your daughter feels unsafe to get him or her moved to a different classroom. Also get the other parents to email. Its the beginning of the year - do not wait to take action on this or this will be like this all year.

But she doesn't (reasonably) fear for her safety. The teacher was certainly at risk, but nothing in the OP suggests that the other students were physically at risk. OP needs to talk to her anxious child about how we are all struggling with things, that this other child probably also has anxiety that manifests differently, and that evacuating the classroom was how the school keeps the students safe while he is learning better tools.

You don't think the child threatening to kill people wouldn't make the other children fear for their safety? Is there something wrong with you?

The kid is presumably also 9. It is exceedingly unlikely that he has the means to kill anyone. I'm not doubting that it was scary, but talking about how the school can keep everyone safe is more productive than demonizing the kid. (If this was high school, or even middle school, it would be different.) Learning to distinguish between realistic and unrealistic threats is a key skill, especially for someone with anxiety.

Hey lookie here. A mom who has a kid who terrorizes others and happily sends him to school to keep on doing that important work.

It sounds like your child attends a very bad schools with kids who suffer abuse at home. I feel for those children, but would not want my kids in the same learning environment. Especially of your daughter says there are other kids like this. If you can afford to move or put her in private school, do it. Don't sacrifice your kid for 'the greater good' like folks on here advocate.

Not necessarily a "very bad" school. We moved to a well-regarded FCPS elementary school (high Great Schools score, high test scores, etc. etc.) and my child has a disruptive student in her class. He attacked and hurt another child with an object but is still in school. The other child was moved to a different classroom.

Someone in my kids' GreatSchools 9 scoring school was punched in the nose by a disruptive student who had a 1 on 1 aide at the time of the incident. These things don't just happen at bad schools these days.

My child was a classroom destroyer in early elementary. Several times the room had to be evacuated because of his actions. He was in a self contained classroom. He's now in high school and is a completely different kid--dpesn't even have an IEP anymore.

I say this to let you know that as a parent of one of these kids we really feel for all the other kids in the classroom and I beg of you to let the administration know how the kids feel and the trauma they experience.

Getting services from the school for kids with problems is an uphill battle and having other parents complain helps get these kids the services they need.

You will not find out about any services he has, if he's been suspended or not, or what the plan is for him becuase of privacy, but you can let the admin know how this affects your child.

The emails need to be factual, to the point and not contain phrases like "Jimmy's a pain in the butt and causes way too many problems." Say "Jimmy's actions scared my child into not wanting to attend school."

Yes, and meanwhile democrats are trying desperately to pretend that RFK Jr is lying when he says we have more autistic kids than ever -- that the issue is that more kids are simply being diagnosed than before.

Wrong. We have many, many, many more kids with emotional damage and brain damage than ever before. Is it autism? Who knows. Autism seems to be the place all kids are lumped in now. Whatever it is, our kids need serious help because they are being damaged. By something.

I'm a democrat btw.

They happen everywhere. Our kids are in trouble.

Bad parenting? Gentle Parenting? Lax rules? Busier parents? The kids I personally know who are problems in my kids' classrooms aren't special needs or autistic. They do have home life issues though.

The autistic kids I know are quirky and nerdy, but not violent.

If this is FCPS, good luck. They did nothing about credible shooting threats.

Also a democrat. I don’t think anyone thinks RFK is lying when he says that things like autism and adhd are increasing. We just are upset that he’s cutting money to actually research causes and treatments while hyper focusing on theories that have already been disproven because he doesn’t have the intelligence to learn new facts and understand research methodologies. It’s very upsetting. We do really need different methods for addressing the range of issues in classrooms, or we will not have anyone left that is willing to teach.

SOMETHING is wrong and the way we've been doing business has not been working for our children. When I hear people on NPR talking about how over-diagnosed autism is not it makes me turn off the radio. Walk into any school in Montgomery County and you will see multiple disturbed children in every classroom, kids who cannot sit still, who cannot follow directions, who disrupt the class, who clap hands etc etc. No these are not kids who are only now being diagnosed. SOMETHING is wrong and we need to figure it out. Business as usual isn't going to help. RFK is the one thing I like about Trump's administration.

Complain in writing to everyone you can think of - Principal, guidance counselor, school board, etc. Focus on the disruption and threat to your own child. Do this every time something happens. In writing. It can take YEARS for the school system to offer a more appropriate placement even if the parents, teacher, and school staff are on board. Having a large paper trail and complaints from many different people can help.
