Is substitute teaching like uber?

Mathematically speaking- it’s quite impossible to for 6k to get even a day of work within a whole year.

This shouldn't be allowed either. And I say that as a current sub.[/quote

Then they will have over 100 unfiled subs a day...

I wonder if a school keeps of list of “favorite” subs that they ring up to see if they would like to take a job?

I started subbing last year and I worked at over a dozen different schools over the course of the year. If I liked the class I was working in, I'd leave my contact info with the teacher. I've definitely become a "go to" sub at one school - the office admin who I sign in with called me several times last year and already reached out this year. It's great to have a relationship with one school but I'd like to have that relationship with more than one school.

Are subs not required to take a basic math or English test? My daughter said the first lady reminded her of a really strict sub. She even started speaking sharply in her own language—which wasn’t Spanish—so none of her friends or classmates could even help translate.

Nice! Is this a full time (40hrs) gig for you?

I'm on a list at a school as a preferred sub. This school rarely has a vacancy go up on Red Rover even when there was a shortage.

My kids' ES was like this. They had at least 10 preferred subs, which was usually enough.

And are these “regular” jobs for you- as in, are you consistently working 4-5days a week?

If you are on a preferred sub list at a school you could sub 3-5 days a week, or 5 days as a long-term sub.

If you don’t mind what assignment it is than it’s great, but I like to sub only specific classes

DP - it sounds like you want a long-term job which is anything 10 days and over. If you become a preferred sub at a school, you will usually be approached to fill in for a teacher that has to leave during the year - unplanned situations come up like this and principals will do their best to fill the position with a person they like first. I know someone that did long-term subbing for an entire school year for 1 teacher. Gatehouse will also send out emails occasionally to all substitutes to apply for a long-term position to openings at certain schools. Usually you are told to send resume directly to that school.

Yes, but what they don't tell you is that long-term subs become responsible for all planning, grading, parent conferences, etc. ALL of the things teachers do, but with zero training and a fraction of the pay. I made the mistake of agreeing to be a long-term sub and it was an absolute nightmare, for all of the above reasons.

+1
I’m a retired teacher sub and a long-term position is not something I would do.
