What careers making 100,000 + as a new grad would you recommond for my daughter

Inflation has been too high in the past few years. 100k now is like making 60 20 yrs ago. It’s not too far fetched for certain professions.

My daughters friend got a job at South Nassau Hospital on Long Island with a 100K to start out of college as a nurse. She actually lives 10 minutes from hospital at home.

Reminds me of the $100,000 box from “Lost in America.”

That's NY. Georgetown is right now paying new grad RNs $33/hour or about $68k year.

Quant finance, AI research, software engineering, data science, investment banking all pay well over 100k out of college.

Ancecdata is just that. Plus, Long Island is a hcol area, so the wages go with that.

I can't believe the number of idiots who apply to something like Hertz rental car for a job instead of real careers...

I work in commercial real estate as well, but as a lawyer not a broker. You will be absolutely floored by how much the commercial brokers make on a large transaction - it is absolutely bonkers. However, if your daughter has good networking skills and strong ethic, she can go far in this industry.

What does it take to become an actuary?

Lots of brain and an ability to delay gratification. And the starting salary is < $100K.

An actuary

Mind you the “good committed” SWEs are mostly autistic hyper fixated computer obsessed individuals. If you’re even slightly more normal, go for finance.

What does your daughter need $100k out of college for? If she’s hyper intelligent, a PhD in stats, applied math, some fields of physics and CS will net her $200k+ near starting salary, but she needs to be really intelligent. Why not just do accounting?

Also it sometimes comes with some sacrifices to happiness that can’t be measured easily: frequent business travel that is not glamorous, long hours, intense pressure, and no time for self care.

I say this as a similar parent: let her figure it out herself.

+1000

My one kid started at $65K, in a MCOLA. Not STEM, had no internships (thanks covid). 3 years later are making $78K/year and getting a moderate bonus yearly (4-5%, sometimes 10%). But they typically work 40-45 hour weeks, and only put in longer hours when it's "pressure time/product release/etc". They only have to travel 3-4 times per year (for 3days typically each time). So their quality of life is high, they are doing well, but love that they don't have to make so many sacrifices.
As they state, there are a few on their team (same start group from 3 years ago) who get 20% raises and 15% bonuses, but those people all work 60-70 hour weeks, have not gotten a promotion, they just work longer hours. When everyone else is gathering on Sundays to play games, watch NFL, have a party, they are leaving at 4pm to go to the office to do 3-4 hours of work. So they are workaholics who are getting paid the same hourly as my kid. And if they stopped working those hours, their ranking would go down.

She wants to be a software engineer or a data scientist but is tech oversaturated now ? Also I have family members working in tech who have been laid off , and it took them months to find a job . Also outside of FAANG tech isn't as lucrative .

Plumbing.

With your various restrictions (no healthcare etc) your daughter might have to learn to live on about $80,000 per year for the first few years after undergrad. I know that’s asking a lot, but I’ve actually heard of multiple young people doing this.
