Why are people in this area so obsessed with wealth?

This, although people are curious about your wealth when they think you may have it or may have more money than they do and they can't figure out how or why you do. It bugs them. You see this usually in the workplace (co-workers who earn more, have more education, a higher title etc), but it can happen any where that a stranger is bold or rude or delusion enough to ask.

Yep those umc people here are strivers. I dont trust them.

I'm aware but on this forum it's incredibly cheesy how the wannabe upper class acts.

Add Boston and Miami and Chicago and Dallas and Houston.

The DMV tends to have a lot of UMC people but relatively fewer super wealthy old or new money types compared to other big cities.

Op here. I'm aware but my current is from one of those cities and he did not grow up obsessed with wealth despite growing up having plenty. Myself I grew up with a mother who came from generational wealth but she married my dad for love and I plan to do the same.

People who grew up with plenty of money usually are not as obsessed with wealth. Money is just a matter of comfort to them, a daily fixture.

Because you need money to live a decent life around here and if you didn’t grow up with it then the only way to achieve your financial and lifestyle goals is to spend lots of time thinking about how boost earnings, invest, etc.

People in this area are obsessed with everything from dating to food to schools to sports etc. The area just attracts highly neurotic personalities.

That's right. They often take it for granted, and/or they are sensitive about people liking them for their money, so they try to hide it or limit their dating pool to people from their circle.

I think for most people more is better, they just don't talk about it even if they are obsessed with it. Like other big cities DC is very expensive attracting a lot go Type A's.

I am dating a man who is the son of a doctor and grew up upper class but he's not from this area and I specifically looked outside of my area because I feel like people here are too judgey. But then again I'm a DC native so maybe I'm more down to earth. But I grew up and I've been in this area for over 40 years now. But I noticed that the people who are obsessed with wealth are people who aren't from this area or haven't grown up in this area. They keep talking about so and so Mary so and so of the social class are from etc. Seems weird to me.

So you’re a 40 year old single woman dating an ultra rich doctor?

I’m sure his father was obsessed with wealth so her beau didn’t have to be.

Seems worse in the wealthy south and texas.

They don’t even care if you moved away to a top university, have a real career expertise, or have lived in a totally different region of the country or world. Only care about social status, looks, money wealth. The kicker is they think their two-facedness = etiquette!

Atlanta is *not* wealthy like northern VA. Ew.
