Why are people in this area so obsessed with wealth?

| I don't find that anywhere else. I am dating a man who is the son of a doctor and grew up upper class but he's not from this area and I specifically looked outside of my area because I feel like people here are too judgey. But then again I'm a DC native so maybe I'm more down to earth. But I grew up and I've been in this area for over 40 years now. But I noticed that the people who are obsessed with wealth are people who aren't from this area or haven't grown up in this area. They keep talking about so and so Mary so and so of the social class are from etc. Seems weird to me. |

Quite to the contrary. People here are obsessed with appearing to be middle class.
"HHI 600K but we drive a 10 year old Honda and housing [my 4500 sqft home] is nothing extraordinary and is very expensive. We don't own a jet or have a private chef. We're solidly middle class." |

I think the poster probably meant that the DMV has many adults obsessed with wealth but most of those people didn't grow up in the DMV. Competitive people gravitate to the DMV, NYC, SFO, and a few other places. DMV kids who hate all the competition sometimes move away for that very reason. |

Oh my dear. I've lived in several countries on different continents, and a lot of people are obsessed with wealth. It usually goes hand in hand with professional or social ambition and drive. There are more in cities, obviously, but you can also find them in country towns (they're usually the ones who end up being mayor or owning half the town).

+1000. The Ivy law degrees and bank accounts are the only thing people have going from them. Many are unattractive and do not have any normal non-DC friends. Their kids hate them and are on SSRIs. So bragging about their alleged status on DCUM makes them feel better. |
