VT Engineering can be a tough admit for anyone. VT non-Engineering is an easier admit than for Engineering. One will get a variety of seemingly conflicting answers unless one separates those two different admissions categories.

+1
It’s two entirely different levels of competition for engineering vs everything else there. It’s kind of weird for a school to be super good at just one thing and very mid at all other subjects.

The overall acceptance rate is extremely high

VT Engineering acceptance rate is not "extremely high".

+1. Like I said: it's one reality for Eng.; 1 entirely different admissions reality for ALL OTHER parts of VT.

I don’t think 57% is “extremely” high. High, but not a shoo-in for a lot of students. Use of Naviance/Scoir would be important.

If your student is not interested in engineering, the GPA/test scores of admitted students and acceptance rate at VT will be similar to JMU.
Anonymous
If you are very high stats beware. They like to waitlist.

Evidence/citation for this assertion?

Not true for business either. My ds was waitlisted and never moved from waitlist for VT, but was admitted to the honors college at JMU.

Vt publishes all kinds of data by major and demographics, go look it up.

How much AP did they take? Stats?

Fairly wide range. My daughter took 10 but it was on the high end in that group. I would say 6-7 was about average. But they did take mostly honors classes otherwise, none were TO, and I am sure most, if not all, had at least around a 4.0 weighted GPA.

Once again: you have NO IDEA what grades, stats, and classes these kids took. Parents, please stop pretending you know all the details about kids who are not your own. It's comical.

As stated numerous times on this board, the likelihood of admission completely depends on the major to which a student applies. It is MUCH harder to get into engineering versus, for example, consumer sciences.

Yes AND the rely heavily on several very subjective essay interpretations which now also are being read by AI. Good luck LOL

You people have to get over the AI announcement. The first read used to be by two humans. It is now by one human and one AI. They even decreased the differential between the two scores needed to trigger an additional review by another human. Your kid is not being assessed and rejected by AI.

Sure, but it’s not like VT is known for making decisions that make sense to begin with. Let’s introduce AI and see what happens! A crapshoot is a crapshoot

DP. You seem to have a chip on your shoulder where VT is concerned. Once other schools start using AI (along with human readers), will you be outraged about that, too?

My one kid goes to TJ. The acceptance odds for VT are not great for it and really random looking when you go to Naviance.

My other kid goes to a solid but “mid tier” FCPS HS - oddly lots more green check marks in naviance and less of a random pattern to who is in vs rejected. I don’t think VT is a fan of magnet programs.

It seems to me they don’t like being considered a safety and like to yield protect. So they deny kids who seem overqualified for the school. I know multiple kids who got in to “better” schools and denied at Tech.

They say right on their website that they do not yield protect.

What they don't publish is GPA/test scores by school or college.

Strange statement. VT isn't "mid" at other subjects at all. It's got a great reputation, and not just in engineering.

65% overall is surprisingly high and I have no issues with VT nor am I a uva booster or someone with an agenda.

My kid got into VT engineering, in state competitive public NoVa HS. 4.0 UW, 4.4 weighted, 11 AP, 3DE: MV, DE, LA, and 1510 SAT.

Also in for engineering OOS at UMich, Penn State, Ohio State, UF. WL at UVA engineering and never got off.

Attending a private T20.

DP. The in-state acceptance rate is actually 47%, per SCHEV. I think a lot of people are truly misinformed here.

Also, acceptance rate is just one piece of the puzzle. You also need to look, as available, at the stats (e.g., test scores, GPAs, etc.) of admitted students. University X may have a higher acceptance rate than University Y, but if it's applicant pool is on average of higher caliber, it could nevertheless be more difficult to gain admission to it than University Y.
