VT Engineering can be a tough admit for anyone. VT non-Engineering is an easier admit than for Engineering. One will get a variety of seemingly conflicting answers unless one separates those two different admissions categories. [/quote]

It’s two entirely different levels of competition for engineering vs everything else there. It’s kind of weird for a school to be super good at just one thing and very mid at all other subjects. [/quote]

Also, acceptance rate is just one piece of the puzzle.  You also need to look, as available, at the stats (e.g., test scores, GPAs, etc.) of admitted students.  University X may have a higher acceptance rate than University Y, but if it's applicant pool is on average of higher caliber, it could nevertheless be more difficult to gain admission to it than University Y.
