Here's my suggestions as someone that has done a substantial amount of long drives:
- stop when you want to stop. Have some sense of when the next opportunity will be, especially in rural areas, but don't stop if nobody needs to stop. You want to be on the road, not stopping - Bring a battery powered air pump. If you get a small leak in a tire, it'll be way easier to get you to somewhere you can get it fixed. - pre download Google Maps for your region in case you lose cell service (but you probably won't) - decide if the destination is the destination or the journey is the destination - headphones for the kids. |
Get the Panera Sip Club! The first 3 months are usually free and there’s often a Panera not far off highways. You can get a free hot coffee, iced coffee, soda, or iced tea every 2 or 3 hours. Bathrooms are usually clean. It’s only one drink per sip club membership, so maybe you could all download it under different phone numbers/credit cards so you each get a drink when you stop. |
This is good advice. Or a can of fix a flat which you can buy at any auto parts store. |
Caffeine in liquid form just increases the number of pit stops needed. Chew chocolate espresso beans. |
Does it really matter than much if we get there a little bit later? |
It would only be 3 times right? Hour 2, hour 4, hour 6, arrive at destination hour 8 |
I do that. Just as you need to walk around a plane for the sake of your circulation, you also need to get out of the car regularly and walk around a bit. |
Exactly. I’m not sure why that’s such a hard concept to understand. I’m guessing most of the posters saying that it’s crazy are men eager to race to the destination so they can do some more sitting there. |
I’d only use fix a flat if you have to as I understand it ruins the tire. |
I imagine it’s mostly men doing the driving and want to get there as quick as possible to get away from their nagging wives wondering why they haven’t stopped every hour like they want to. |
We use the iExit app to plan our pit stops. It shows what restaurants and gas stations are at each upcoming interstate exit. |
Late 40s mom here who does an 8 hour drive with my 14 year old annually to get him either to or from camp. (My DH and I alternate.) We stop twice—once at the halfway point for lunch and then once more for gas/bathroom break. Never gotten a UTI.
I download a bunch of podcasts on advance. Those make the trip much more enjoyable for me than music. My son puts his earphones in for most of the trip. Everyone’s happy. |

Oh I'm sorry. My bad. I didn't realize you were too dumb to understand basic biology. |
