My apologies. I hate ragging on schools as I think all schools serve a purpose. My main point is there’s too many people getting a bachelor’s and not enough jobs. Guess I didn’t make myself clear. Was too angry when I hit post lol. |
Trades are hard work and hard on the body. Many of them at least.
But the CS and Engineering majors can always get into them. They would have a major leg up. |
Go on r/CSmajors and see the many kids struggling to get an entry level or internship. Or how Berkeley CS students can’t find anything. It’s over saturated. 20% of Stanford undergrads major in CS. Swarthmore’s top majors are CS and engineering. I may have rose colored glasses on as CS and engineering USED to be great social mobility majors for low income and middle class. We need to tell the kids that’s gone now. CS is now the number one major with over 100,000 kids graduating each year with a bachelor’s. Surely a tenth of those kids could’ve done a trade. |
That is true. I hope we do get more people back in trades instead of it being looked down upon. However, the physicality of it is rough. But, what’s better? Sitting in an office for 40+ hours staring at a screen or being active on a construction site? |
At UVA, CS majors are 7%. Liberal Arts majors are at 20%.
Maybe we should be asking how many more liberal arts majors we need instead? https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/uva-6968/academics |
I know you are trying to do a dig but liberal arts is not a major at UVA. They have interdisciplinary make your own major programs. Similar to NYU Gallatin. 2nd UVA is not known for CS. UMD which is know for CS and a flagship is 21% CS majors. |
Forget humanities, social sciences, STEM, etc. Get kids excited about trades. Too many kids in college, some that would do better in a trade then graduating with a 2.1 in Psychology or CS. Edison and Lewis have trade programs. Why don’t the rich high schools have them? |
+1 Same here. |
Well, of course. UVA isn’t where one goes for CS. |
Cutboff foreign cs students and h1bs |
You ask about this fairly often.

So a top CS school (UMD) has 21% CS majors. No surprise there. But.. most universities aren't top CS schools.. and CS is just not that high there, similar to UVA. There isn't a glut of them. |
Or Chemical or Biomolecular Engineering. |
lol a swing into humanities so you can have even more unemployment? have you tried bring an english, french, history major in this economy? |
Every recent CS grad will tell you it’s tough out there presently. It became an over saturated major in recent years.
But engineering grads are doing fine. There is a lot of demand for engineering majors. It’s also the toughest major there is and I think employers value the smarts, grit, and determination of students that do well in engineering. Which is why even finance and consulting are increasingly recruiting engineering majors. The smartest kids these days tend to be in engineering. |
