What is the issue with my son playing outside shirtless? Is not wearing a shirt outside inappropriate?

For those of you opposed to shirtless people exercising on a hot day, what are your thoughts about girls showing up to school practically naked?

I’m more offended by butt cheeks hanging out than an exposed torso.

It’s low class

OP, it seems like rather than crowdsourcing this, you should ask your husband 1) what his actual concern w/your kid playing shirtless is and 2) if he plans to impose all the rules from his childhood on your kids.

Also, wearing a breezy dress as acceptable business attire while men are confined to a suit.

It goes both ways.

Apparently you’re unaware of all the men walking around with their pants on the ground

I think it's fine for boys to go outside shirtless on hot days but I also have no problem with girls or women wearing just a sports bra to exercise in hot weather (or whenever they want) and I don't care if they wear leggings or short shorts. And a lot of people seem very worked up about those things, like women need to cover up so as not to offend.

So I think OP's husband and neighbor are being prudes, but on the other hand it's highly likely both those busybodies would flip out if a girl the same age as OP's son went out to play in shorts and a sports bra top, so at least they are being consistent about their prudery.

I am the poster who said earlier that I don’t see why all kids can’t wear shirts (obviously not at pool, beach, backyard sprinkler etc)… I find both situations tacky (not offensive really). I don’t understand how we have convinced a large group of women that revealing most of their body = empowerment. I know people who believe this and they get offended when I say that it is not pleasant for anyone to see and it is also distracting for everyone in the class, especially young/teenage boys (which makes complete sense to me!). My friends son had a girl in his high school class who came to school in a very ripped/shredded shirt and no bra, so she was exposed frequently but since there’s no dress code at their school (not DMV), it was accepted. I don’t think that attire is appropriate for school.

This will probably all come back to bite me when my girls are teens!

Yes this. This would be an actual solution.

So some people find it tacky. Who cares? You do you right?

Completely fine to be shirtless outside at any age. Re: schools - 100% in support of strong dress codes and/or uniforms. There's time for play and there's time for studying. I expect young men at my work to show up in a suit to client meetings, but I'm totally fine if they want to play skins and shirts during a game of basketball in a neighborhood.

There is actually no link between melanoma and UV. There is a link between squamous cell and basal cell skin cancer and UV. This is a deadly myth actually. The most deadly melanomas often happen in dark-skinned people in strange places (e.g. inside their vagina, under a nail bed) and it doesn't occur to them that its melanoma until it is way advanced because of the myth of skin cancer = fair skinned people + sun exposure. P.S. Squamous cell and basal cell skin cancer are way less deadly than melanoma

Hot take: it's ok for prepubescent girls too

The comments about male privilege are ridiculous. Do you also rant about how its so unfair men cannot have their butts hang out at the pool?

You know how men claimed this privilege? They simply do it and DGAF. Women should learn from men on this.

La leche league normalized breastfeeding in public by sending a coven of Karens to a business who had kicked out a woman for BFing and a group of them with "protest" by publicly breastfeeding at the offending business

Completely agree! I grew up in eastern europe and you didn't wear a top on your bathing suit until you had boobs. When i came here and saw babies in bikinis I had a heart attack.

It's fine, OP.

Tan is still a sign of sun damage.
